Rootstock

-34 actual air temp. The only trees I have lost the last two winters, which had lots of -30's, were NY Bonkers. Other than that I have die back on all my pears but they are still alive.

Bitter cold air temps if not prolonged like several weeks is not as much of an issue for the roots if there is good snow cover. Talked to a group of loggers at the end of January. Local lakes with wind swept areas are froze enough to drive on, but the loggers are not able to get into swamps with snow cover. Same thing by my house, we had a ton of rain in Dec followed by good snow events. My sump pump was still running daily. In real winters it stops for several months until spring thaw.

-34? Good gracious!!! That'll make a man a eunuch in no time.
