I couldn't stop myself from...

Native Hunter

5 year old buck +
...buying some grafted persimmon trees. They looked too good.

The one in the pic below has been set for about a week. It's a Morris Burton cultivar which is early fall drop, and I also set 3 Deer Magnets, which are November drop.

I also have some scions on the way right now and will be doing some sex change operations soon on some older male trees.

those look awesome, I bought some from 6 from native nursery a few years ago, planted them and never really messed with them, I think only 2 survived, I should have put them in a better spot, but I was running out of time and space good luck

New persimmon looks really good. We can't grow them where my camp is located - wish we could though. They are deer candy.
Good to see you're finally starting into habitat work !! :D

Serious note: How did you fare with those storms that came thru Ky. ?? Hope all is well Native.

Bowsnbucks, the really bad storms in the state were a long distance from where I live, but I do know a lot of people in some of those areas that were hit. Here at home we had lots of rain but no severe winds and tornados.

Thanks for asking, and all is well for now.

Anybody here having success with persimmons in zone 4?

I've got some on their second year at my place, I'm not sure how they faired through the winter yet though.

NH, where did you get those GREAT looking persimmon?

The came from a local Super Wal Mart. Chestnut Hills is now selling trees through WM. They had Dunstan Chestnuts and an amazing variety of persimmons. I bought 4. Three were the November Drop Deer Magnet. The one in the picture is probably late September or Early October drop. There were at least 3 more varieties, including some Japanese persimmons at the store.

I was really shocked to find them there. It's one of the poorest Super WMs that I've ever been to. Their hunting items and guns are not nearly as good as at other WMs I've been to.

To me these trees just looked incredibly healthy, and I can also use scion wood from them in the future to graft my male persimmons.

The ones I bought were $29.95 and they had some larger sizes for $10 more. That's not cheap by any means, but I will pay a little more for quality like that.

I knew that Chestnut Hill was selling through Walmart (http://www.chestnuthilltreefarm.com/ and you find a link to which stores they're shipping to), but I had no idea that they were such good looking trees.

I'm no expert, but I believe Jack on the other forum passed along once that the Japanese persimmon don't fall to the ground and thus aren't great choices for wildlife.

Last Fall I planted ~25 seedling persimmon that a forum friend had started in root maker pots and most of them are doing well so far. I'd really like to plant more as they seem like plant-and-forget soft mass trees.

Again, congrats on a great find!

Looks like New Hampshire walmarts will be getting some soon - guess I'll have to keep an eye peeled!

Thank you. Yes, I do recall Jack saying that about the Japanese persimmons. I only have one of those and its years from bearing. I grafted persimmons for a few hours this afternoon. I got some scions from Dogdoc on the other forum. Going to do a few more tomorrow. Good luck with your seedlings.

UPDATE - I got a few successful persimmon grafts.

And that Wal Mart persimmon in my first pic, planted this spring had 3 persimmons on it already. Couldn't hardly believe it.

I didn't even know any persimmons were there and found one laying on the ground. Then looked and two more hanging on the tree.
