Was also thinking. I have a quick hitch so not sure that would help me much anyways.

Any advice on planting sunflowers? specifically settings for our drills. I have not calibrated for SF seeds yet, curious if someone else has and would share the settings. I have not decided if I am gonna do 30 inch rows or 18 yet

I think I'm going to try it too, tape off every other row for 15" rows.

I hate tape. Leaves a residue that seed sticks to. Mine came with plastic block off plates that snap in. There in a brown paper bag somewhere 🤣 Haven’t seen them in years so yeah, I use duct tape.

yes I have those charts, a lot in 7.5 inch rows. I want to do 30 inch rows I think

I'm going to be drilling about 6 acres of RC Chippewa Switch Grass in about two weeks. Hard to beleive how small those SG seeds are. Smaller than clover or most brassica. Looking to put down about 5 lbs / acre....and planning to skip every third row by duct taping the seed cup openings......in order to get some "pathways" thru the switch. Got my drop tubes behind the openers....just dumping the seeds in the disturbed slots....and packing 'em with the wheels.

First round of Gly and 24d put down on Friday and Sat.......and will follow at two weeks with more Gly and Simazine....then plant the Switch a few days later....depending on weather.

Not sure how many of you guys have drilled switch.....but would like to know your settings or experience with the small seed box. I'm told to start by using the alfalfa settings.....and calibrate from there. Any words of wisdom or advice here? T.I.A.

I just used 25 lb of oil dry with the seed and calibrated. But that was with Big Rock switch.

Did you mix the oil dry at 50 /50 with the seed? I've been looking at rice at Costco....but the switch is smaller.

What is oil dry?

I think he is talking about Floor Dry....like mechanics use for an oil spill. (I keep some around too....to put on any oil leaks from cylinders and such). It's relatively cheap and fairly small granuals.....but it may be somewhat abrasive IMO. It's likely similar to kitty litter.

If 3 out of every 4 rows are plugged to get 30” spacing, I’d expect the rates to be roughly 1/4 of what the chart says.

Planted a sorghum screen and beans this week with the 3p600.

I disked prior to the sorghum planting and didn’t get the surface too smooth and planting performance was meh.

First field I planted beans left me considering a true no till drill as getting seeds buried was less than great. Second field with different soil worked great!

It seems like if the soil is right, a 3p600 will be great, but if it's crusted or hard packed, there will be a lot of seed laying on the surface.

Foggy I just used a 25 lb bag of oil dry mixed in the seed and calibrated. Use it also for clover seed. Yes it is the stuff that soaks up spills.

How much seed did you mix with the 25 lbs of floor dry? Equal amounts? I assume this was in the small seed box....did it go thru very well? I may do this with the tiny switchgrass seeds.

You got me thinking now. May have been only 10 lbs of oil dry as the field was only quarter acre. With 2 lbs of switch grass. It did work fine. If the switch was taller right now I would post a picture. Was very happy with first year growth which was last year. Small seed box. I have messed with different fillers as in oats, livestock pellets, pell lime and have liked oil dry the best.

thanks....thats good to know. Putting down 5 lbs of Switch Grass to the acre is not much seed. A filler could help allot. I may try 50/50.

Why not just use the small seed box with no filler?
I was hoping you would weigh in. I have not drilled as low as 5 lbs / acre before.....and was thinking that is not much seed. Less than a gallon in quantity as it looks to me. May give calibration a try with that small seed amount before its time to get the job done. Gonna plant in ten days or so.
