He caught his p.b. smallie yesterday. My wife takes my daughter to a nearby town so she can twirl baton in the Armory building, and Chris likes to fish in the river while they're doing that.

Duey Johnson made lots of wooden decoys and has moved on to the happy fishing grounds. I have made some wooden fish decoys. There is a tradition of winter spearing in Minnesota, North Dakota, Michigan, Tribes in Wisconsin, sturgeon spearing In Wisconsin,and some spearing in South Dakota.

Different rules in different states and lakes. In Minnesota, we can spear northern pike, whitefish, tullibee, and rough fish.

Sandbar I take it you are from Minnesota. It must be a lot colder there than here in michigan. Curious have you heard of Abe Nelson spears. I am into pike spearing here. Any pics of your wooden decoys I would enjoy seeing

I have not heard of Abe Nelson spears. Traditions and decoy styles vary between areas. Lakes are just freezing up here.

I make miniature decoys and most are decorative. I occasionally use a small red and white or white one. Most decoy carvers are far more skilled than me.

Are Swedish hooks what are called circle hooks? I haven’t tip up fished for several years. I much prefer sitting in the dark house and watching fish. I can pick which ones to spear or try different decoys and colors of decoys.

I am west of Somaliapolis 50 miles. I think I might go try to catch some walleyes on a frozen rearing pond tomorrow night. Next weekend I hope to be fishing in northern MN. Its making ice fast. During deer hunting my brother in law and I took the boat out and caught a bunch of crappies over some deep water. I expect those crappies have not moved since we left them.

Stopped at an antique store yesterday and found a 1950 pumkinseed in a junk box for a dollar. Took the hardware off last night, finished cleaning up the parts this morning.

Since there has been some sweet tackle posts….

I was sick and tired of my plastic tackle box always popping open and just hated it.

So I found a 1940’s vintage metal one with three good clasps that was in great shape. Cleaned it up, tossed out everything I didn’t use or want in my old one and am restocking this one with antique wood lures , the kind my Dad had in his old box when I was a kid.

The grandkids get a kick looking through the new/old one now with all the cool old warriors in it.
