fishing reports

He caught his p.b. smallie yesterday. My wife takes my daughter to a nearby town so she can twirl baton in the Armory building, and Chris likes to fish in the river while they're doing that.

Socks and shoes in the creek? Waters gotta be getting chilly in Oct.

Sandbar you must live near the north pole to be spearing next week. I have never saw a duey where are they made. Spearing is one of my favorite sports what do you spear for

Duey Johnson made lots of wooden decoys and has moved on to the happy fishing grounds. I have made some wooden fish decoys. There is a tradition of winter spearing in Minnesota, North Dakota, Michigan, Tribes in Wisconsin, sturgeon spearing In Wisconsin, and some spearing in South Dakota.

Different rules in different states and lakes. In Minnesota, we can spear northern pike, whitefish, tullibee, and rough fish.

Sandbar I take it you are from Minnesota. It must be a lot colder there than here in michigan. Curious have you heard of Abe Nelson spears. I am into pike spearing here. Any pics of your wooden decoys I would enjoy seeing

I have not heard of Abe Nelson spears. Traditions and decoy styles vary between areas. Lakes are just freezing up here.

I make miniature decoys and most are decorative. I occasionally use a small red and white or white one. Most decoy carvers are far more skilled than me.

Are Swedish hooks what are called circle hooks? I haven’t tip up fished for several years. I much prefer sitting in the dark house and watching fish. I can pick which ones to spear or try different decoys and colors of decoys.

I am west of Somaliapolis 50 miles. I think I might go try to catch some walleyes on a frozen rearing pond tomorrow night. Next weekend I hope to be fishing in northern MN. Its making ice fast. During deer hunting my brother in law and I took the boat out and caught a bunch of crappies over some deep water. I expect those crappies have not moved since we left them.

Stopped at an antique store yesterday and found a 1950 pumkinseed in a junk box for a dollar. Took the hardware off last night, finished cleaning up the parts this morning. 20241129_215149.jpg20241130_074251.jpg

Since there has been some sweet tackle posts….

I was sick and tired of my plastic tackle box always popping open and just hated it.

So I found a 1940’s vintage metal one with three good clasps that was in great shape. Cleaned it up, tossed out everything I didn’t use or want in my old one and am restocking this one with antique wood lures , the kind my Dad had in his old box when I was a kid.

The grandkids get a kick looking through the new/old one now with all the cool old warriors in it.

I got out ice fishing last Friday, Saturday and Sunday. A few of the smaller lakes had 4-6 inches that we fished on. Some of the bigger and deeper lakes that I saw were still wide open. We didnt move around too much and caught enough for a couple nice meals. Mainly crappies and a few sunfish and northerns.

We just lost a guy about ten miles south of your north place. Be careful.

I have been on the smaller lakes.

^^^ Are you referring to the fella that went through on ATV on Blackwater? Really surprised that anyone would feel safe on ATV already in that area. I have fished on that lake a couple times. Also roofed a house on that lake about 8 years ago. I spent a LOT of time just northeast of that lake at my wife's great uncle's place. Some great water to fish in that area.

Yup.

Nice!

I am hoping to go up north and do some Norwegian TV watching (spearing) between Christmas and New Years. I did some 2 years ago and had lots of fun even though I didn't see anything but puny little snakes. I plan on going to some much better water to give it a try. Have several people in my family that have never seen a spear hole so it should be a good time.

Sandbur, I know you're big into the fish decoys. Have you ever used a decoy that is built with a fish in it's mouth? I believe most predatory fish are also territorial and are more likely to strike a fish if it has a fish in it's mouth. I've rigged some lures at home to look like a small fish swimming with a smaller fish in it's mouth (90 degrees) and "think" I catch more fish with them than without. Didn't know if this was a me thing, or if you guys up there do it to? If you've done this do you think it attracts more fish?

I have seen decoys made like that but have never used one. I thought they were more decorative.

The fish in the mouth might make it hard to swim.
