EHD Missouri

Here's another one. A real good 2 yr old. I ran half him thru the combine the other day and didn't even realize it til I was blowing off the machine and found a velvet tine on top of the cab.

Man, I feel for you guys! Not sure it's ever got as far north as me and hope it doesnt..

I would have thought we were done after the hard frosts in Northern MO, but apparently my Dad found this today right beside a dried cattle pond. It wasn't there 4-5 days ago and I'm not sure what wouldn't have killed it but eaten so little of it.

I keep telling myself it is the rut and that is why I haven't seen many deer of any kind lately. However, I am really starting to doubt that is the reason. EHD sucks!! We did get 4" of rain these last few days so the cracking mud thing is done. However, we have only had ONE killing frost and here we are almost mid November and no mention of another one even in the forecast.

@Bill How has your firearm season been fairing?

This is the first year in about the last 10 where we struck out as a family. Most of us saw a few 2-3 year olds. I only saw one mature buck and it was for about 2 seconds and out of range and I hunted our three farms hard all firearm season. I have been surprised by the high amount of does and fawns that we have and the overall lack of bucks. This is pretty much the same response everyone around us has had, so I want to give people the benefit of the doubt and say it is not hunting pressure.

Only one of our neighbors found dead deer this summer/autumn, so I am placing the blame on EHD from 2024 and some from 2025 for now.

Tags soup for us and most of the neighbors that only hunt mature deer. One neighbor shot a 2 1/2 year old. I only saw one 3 year old buck and a few younger ones. Most stands doe numbers were low much like last year.

I planted corn this year in hopes in drawing more deer from the neighborhood. I mowed most of it in mid November and it did its job. Stands over mowed corn produced lots of Doe sightings. Unfortunately the does didn’t draw any mature bucks.

The positive out of it is there were a few pretty nice two year olds around that should grow into something down the road.

It sounds like you guys might have been hit harder by EHD. Good to hear about the two year olds.
