The brassica's stalled in growth. My fault for not getting a soil sample.

That's the last time I'll skimp. Although some of them have been eaten as the foliage showing now is smaller than it was 3 weeks ago.

Tubers are small

Natural clover is dominating the stand and seems to be a favorite.
With 2.5 acres of this it should feed them for a while. Just not as long as I'd hoped.

Could just be it petered out on nitrogen if you've clover is doing well.

Bill, I assume you haven't had any rain down there? 29 days since it rained in Western Putnam and nothing in the forecast. I'm hoping the dew has been heavy......

Yep I'm thinking a combination of both. Low nitrogen and low moisture. The rye thatch should have offered good moisture for a while but we are dry now.

Just read this blog. Lots of good information. It is similar info to what I had read on another forum but more in depth and written over a period of time so people are able to post their results which is very interesting and informative. Thanks to all who posted. I noticed there are a number of posters here from WI and some from northern WI. My property is in zone 3 so last frost is May 14th and 1st frost is Sep 25th a 133 day grow season. From what I have read cool season plants should be planted 60-90 days before 1st frost. I lean toward 90 days so I am more likely to get some rain. That puts me planting June 26th and spraying approximately 2 weeks prior to that. The reason I plan to spray is last summer I decided to plot again after about 7 years of no plots and like the no till approach. I sprayed before planting but the prayer nozzles were spotty and I got spotty kill. The other Issue was I mowed before spraying and I think I should have sprayed and then mowed. I planted brassica and chicory in a full sun plot and had OK results. I planted clover in a shady plot and got nothing to come up. Both were fertilized at the time of planting. The last lime was 7 years ago. I do plan to do a soil test this spring. My plan for this year would be to wait for spring green up and then spray the grass I know is going to come up and then plant into it. One question I have is considering Im in Zone 3 when should I plant the winter rye?

I'm not zone 3 but from experience I can tell you that on most years I get my last frost later than the date you mention and my first frost before the date you mention. I like to plant my winter rye mid August. I've planted Labor Day and even up to mid September with success but the additional growth I get from planting in mid August is really noticable and beneficial.

I jusy did a TNM of Kale, sunflower, soybeans, milo, and peas. After reading all of this I kinda wish I would have just left it stand. We have had plenty of moisture for sure. Maybe i'll plant into it next spring and leave it stand to see how it goes. I am also planning on doing another fall planting into this plot so bio mass next year wont be an issue.

Wasn't the OP a proponent of just throwing the right seed and NOT spraying or mowing? I'm too lazy to go back through 10 pages of comments. I swear, he just let it go. Maybe he sprayed some when things got too unruly.

Sunflowers and peas have worked well for me TNM. I would think individual results may vary based off of soil type, previous years crop, thatch planting into, amount of rainfall, etc...

I nuked my WR early this year because I had a thistle and horsetail I wanted to set back before they went to seed. I then spread a load of oats and drug them in / packed with my ATV. I hope that all comes up. I'll throw all my stuff right into that this year and depending on how it looks, won't even spray. Fingers crossed.

If I need to, I'll spot spray. Trying to reduce the chemicals. But I can't condone horsetail and thistle.
