Cultipacker options

We are generally notilling with a notill drill, but in our small plots we overseed and may cultipack. The soils vary, but most are PA shale soils, so redish dirt with rocks. We have a crimper, so not using this for termination.

Good call on the design options in your link. A hand crank and trailing wheels may be a better option than the flip over DIY design.

IF the 4 or 5ft is in good shape, I'd plug in the wlder and upgrade the wheel kit. With rocks, the extra forgiveness in each wheel depth on the large clutipacker is worth it. A larger rock takes the bulk of the weight of the packer on that wheel or two. The difference between the shaft diameter and cultipacker wheel diameter allow that wheel to remain in contact with the soil.

Larger wheels generally have more forgiveness that those 9 inch wheels do. I probably have a bit over an inch of extra travel on the shaft versus 1/2 to 5/8" of those 9 inch ones. Also helps on uneven soils and when the soil is soft.

I have a 4' crimper. It's MUCH easier to flip for transport.

I think I could sell the two and get close to the price of the one I want to buy. I'm just unsure if the smaller wheels are an issue. The notches may be more beneficial for breaking up colds, but not sure if they won't weigh as much

I have a 7 foot cultipacker made from an old Dunham unit. Works great with the big wheels. My BIL has one of those smaller wheel packers with the notched cast wheels. He is not happy wishes the performance…..but I don’t remember why. Check the units offered by Titan.

EDIT: Geez...those prices at Titan seem high! I'd look on FB Marketplace.

I've seen a few Brillion 5 and 6 foot 3 Point seeders available on FB Marketplace from time to time. These have two rows of large wheel packers and a small seeds drill to boot. The prices I have seen seemed very reasonable....and they normally come from farmers as I suppose the may want a different size or newer model. If you could find one of those....that would be a huge score....IMO. Tractor House or FB Marketplace or Machinery Pete are your friends.

I've seen them, but they're usually expensive. Most of the ones I see don't have transport wheels.

Oh yeah......forgot about the transport issue. Duh.

Most of my seeds need to only go to 1/4" or so in depth.....and those Brillion seeders would do fine with most legumes brassicas, grasses and grains. Farmers use them all the time for such stuff. I have not done much for corn or beans in recent years.....and likely will not going forward.

I know of a 6' Firminator I could likely get a deal on, but I don't need that and the RTP Genesis.
