Crabapple timeline

Since the last few posts are about making sauce, has anyone here ever used the aluminum cone gadget with the wooden, cone-shaped pestle inside to force the cooked apples through the holes in the cone? Old-fashioned tool, but it works great.

We have one but haven’t used it for apples.

This crab is firm and still well attached. It might be a late season good source.

I grafted it from scion on a wild tree.

There is also a chance it could be the Ranetka rootstock.

Well time for another update on Ranetka seedlings that have posted some prior years in this long thread (last time post #1184 and more info on each). Looking back, hard to believe for me but these were all planted 10 years ago. They were very small and believe the local conservation club just got rootstocks but resold them cheap too. I like these seedlings and some have benefits over my single grafted dolgo for comparison such as longer hang time and one probably would be a good addition to cider. That one is also the largest fruit and gets lots of critter attention. These pics were taken about almost a week ago

Ranetka F. This tree took a long time to recover after some critter damage on the main stem down low and fruited maybe 4-5 years after the first one Ranetka A

Here is a better look at the Ranetka B fruit. This one is not bad off the tree. Closer to a Chestnut crab over a grafted Dolgo if that makes any sense. But Chestnut obviously wins. Starts dropping in early September and goes well into October which is beyond the hang time of Chestnut & Dolgo in my area.

That one deserves a name!

Have you tried it in sauce, jelly, or cider?

SLN had ratenka, they now have siberian crab. How's the taste on MN 1734. Planted one from SLN this year. Besides kerr and antenna seedlings 1734 is my only eating apple at camp. I have all SLN's deer specialty crabs at home to make more at camp.

No, strictly for the wildlife at this point. I don't do any spraying either.

It has been a long time since I made any jelly. My chokecherries kinda died back.

Sure it would be fine mixed in with some other apples but really only started planting some people varieties 6-7 yrs ago. Most of those are also possible for adding to hard cider but low volume in fruit grown so far.

Been doing the crab apple thing over a couple decades now

I have only sampled that one apple and it was not quite ripe. One other apple left on the tree.

Where are they headed to?

80% of the Chestnut Crabs have dropped. I think their flavor is best right now when they show a bit of pink flesh. Sometimes a bit later with slight watercore.

I had my first Chestnut crab last year, they are one of my favorites so far. Along with Kerr, this is the first year I have had them and I picked them all.
