Violi’s Hanging Crab is dropping some fruit. It might be a premature drop.

Any fruit from your red stemmed dolgo seedlings yet?

Thanks for sharing the photos, beautiful collection you have there!

Yes. Two or three trees have fruit at the top of the tree which are hard to reach. Fruit appears to be typical dolgo size or a bit smaller. I could reach one and tasted it. Pretty sharp. High acid.

I don’t know if I saved a picture.

I thought mine held much longer than this. We made it to our river bottom place last weekend. The tree was loaded again. Took 7 years to fruit but it’s been loaded for two years now that it started fruiting. Too bad it’s leaning about 45 degrees.

The seeds were not dark on those I sampled. I think premature drop. I have seen that with high winds and all of the rainfall. A month ago, larger apples were dropping and appeared to have watercore, but the seeds were still white.

I think rainfall made the apples too heavy.

Do you have any fruit on Sweet Dog or Smitty’s?

I pulled the plug on sweet dog on last years SLN order. Violi's is my most planted tree at camp 5, then 30-06 4 of them. Got 2 or 3 winter wildlife's. Only got 1 AWHO. Biennial kinda threw me off, but I thought I give it a try. Most SLN trees were planted this year from that nursery. I did graft 1 or 2 the year before. I don't buy or graft trees folks do not talk about on here. Only exceptions are empire, granny smith, golden delicious and mcintosh. Wife wanted those. Think empire is NY's best older variety tree. Decent pie, juicy for cider, and no major disease issues.

How the insect resistance on that crossbow. Terry claims Japanese beetles dont like it. I do spray, but it has been the best looking tree out of 4 at home. Virtually not bitten. No caterpillar activity on it yet since planting fall 2022.

You guys are a bad influence...... Thinking I need more Adirondack, courthouse, and giving franklin cider a try at camp. No franklins up there due to so-so reviews. My one fruit dropped in early august.... However, was the best looking fruit out of all my trees so far. Might got some tough skin. Get a hefty amount of bug dimples and yellow jacket damage at my home.

Hoping adirondack self seeds at camp with the birds.

No these were all planted this year. First ones for me. They grew really nice out of all the ones I planted this year. Probably the two best growers.

I don’t spray any of my crabs. Haven’t noticed any issues yet.

How do you guys keep the bees off your eatin' apples? Mine aren't close to being ready to be picked, but the bees are ruining them.
