Crabapple timeline

Here is a pic from a week ago of a red splendor seedling. A bit larger fruit than normal for those at 1 to 1-1/8" and some red flesh. This tree drops quickly and checking yesterday about half is gone. Like really gone. Deer poop everywhere under this thing. Nothing really special, just another crab almost 20 yrs old and drops early. But shows that these smaller fruits are still really on the deer radar.

Did you taste it?

Did you taste it?
I did a few times years ago. Not a spitter but still enough bitterness that not great. Dolgo which is ripe same time is more "mild" than this one if that helps with comparison. The dolgo hasn't dropped much yet though so the hoovers are getting what they can

Deer react to the cheech marin branded soybeans next door?

Teeter,

Bees mess with your apples? At home is yellow jackets. Sugar water traps made out of soda bottles help some. Finding their home and knocking it down helps more.

The dolgo seedling I call Red Dog is ripe and dropping. This is a young tree and I expect fruit to be smaller as the tree ages.

My wife and I picked some Chestnut crabs and will use the two for apple sauce.

How’s it taste? Decent eater?
I kind of liked it. The apples were at slight watercore which is often sweeter.

I had my wife try a Red Dog and asked her if we should add it to the Chestnuts. She said yes.

Pink Pearl needs some time.

All my Crabapples are lucky if the apples get to 1" in size. Anything a guy can do to get a little bigger apples?

Thinning compound. Usually applied around or before june drop. Sevin is commonly used to thin apples to make the remaining ones bigger. Also double as a insecticide.

Deer will use those. I would suggest buying varieties that are listed as apple crabs. Chestnut crab is a great one for your bow stand from now for about two more weeks.

My chestnuts are dropping and we picked a bucket and a half for apple sauce.

That spaetzle / pasta maker you use for apple sauce, what size is the holes? Or is it screen?

Is this device what you were referring to? I am not sure if the size. I suspect about 1/16 inch.

I started making Chestnut Crab Apple Sauce at 2:30 this morning. My wife is making Dolgo Jelly. We want to get it done before the heat of the day.

Gonna be nice for the rest of this year, maybe santa will pick it up for me..........

They come with different sized discs? 3.5 quart one?

You cook the crabs whole or cut them up some?

I have just seen them with one standard size. I find the crabs cook faster if you halve or 1/4 them.

Often dolgos aren’t cut up.
