Crabapple timeline

For me, it is chestnut crab. I have been sampling a few off of the south side of the tree. There are very few drops yet.
I agree. Their rich, unique flavor is hard to beat. It’s so easy to tell when they’re becoming ripe. The deer tear up the ground from standing on her back legs.

On another note, when would you pick Goldrush? I have a couple on one of my grafts that are looking great. I assume fairly late?
 
I broke a frozen chunk off last night. Microwaved a bit, added oatmeal and walnuts, then called it apple crisp. Added milk.

I eat old fashioned oatmeal every morning and never cook it. I eat it as cold cereal with fruit and walnuts.
Sounds tasty!! I also eat raw, old-fashioned oatmeal - no cooking. What a coincidence ..... on a very unlikely way to eat oatmeal !!! Are we both oddballs, Bur?? 🙂 I put either a bit of brown sugar or real maple syrup on it, with dried cranberries or raisins and milk.

Our apple season is just starting to pick up here. Been eating some Summer Rambo apple chunks added to green salads lately. Zestars are also available. Can't wait to try your apple pie filling recipe. I'll be making a big load of sauce again this year, too. I make enough to share lots with family.

Goldrush ripens for us in late October and really into the first 2 weeks of November. It's a late apple, but well worth the wait, IMO. Crazy-good apple for eating or sauce. They keep all winter in our unheated garage. One of the best keepers of all the apples. They get sweeter in storage, but we like the tang of the fresh-picked ones at the end of October & in November.

The writer could of gathered the info from websites and made the table. I know on anty roots 30-06 can do zone 3. Crossbow is likely zone 3 too. Just need to see a nasty winter at camp. Survived 2 of them so far, think the lowest has been -18 so far. Winter before was -35.

Anybody have insight with crabapples on M111 roots? Last 2 years batches have been ok, no big take offs on from either year. Keeping a copy of each variety I have at camp at home on m111. Same m111 batch, apples seem to do noticeably better. Like 4ft vs 2.5ft of growth.

MY personal take you should have both crabs and apples. Have a few apples near your cabin / camp / entrance so you can enjoy the fruits of your labor. Have mostly crabapples deeper in. I know some folks are iffy about going around their land spooking deer. Southern folks, pears might be better for you. Maybe permissions. I know so little about them not sure how to spell them....

I seem to like these crabs so far. 30-06, crossbow, courthouse, violi's, winter wildlife, adirondack, and kerr. All happily liiving in zone 3 adirondacks and zone 5/6 1 mile from a big river in NY.

IF anyone remembers this during the scion exchange. I have the forbidden fruit that's only from washington....... Got a few sticks.

Got CAR bad at my home. IF you do, sundance might be a close 2nd..... Could only get in M7 last year, but stole a twig and put in on M111 the same year. Grows well and with clean leaves.

About 5 years ago I ordered 100 m111 rootstocks and grafted dozens of different varieties of crabs and apples. Can't say I've noticed a big general difference between apples and crabs...but Droptine and 30-06 have been standout performers of the group. Just like their parent trees have been for me. Kerr has been an under performer, but just about everything else has performed at similar levels.

I have no experience with Goldrush.

My wife and daughters would agree with the oddball name.

I sometimes go by JPS. Jack Pine Savage. That’s a northern, flat lander version of a hillbilly.

Kerr seems to be a smaller tree for me. I was looking at tags and I have a Kerr seedling that hasn’t fruited yet.

I was visiting my brother inlaw and looking at his hunting ground. He has a wild 1.25 inch crab that was pretty decent in flavor. If I was younger, I would plant some seed.

That somewhat follows my pattern. Better eating varieties are near the house with a few deer crabs sprinkled in for winter viewing of deer.

There are some exceptions.

Prairie Magic with a few bites out of it. I do not see this with crabs. They eat the whole applecrab.

In order, true Dolgo(not seedling), Trailman, and Whitney continue a slow drop.

Most Trailman on the south side of the tree have dropped. Those on the north side are getting soft and mushy.

Bastian’s Orange Flesh is just starting to drop. The taste is sweet but slightly astringent. I hope I have that term right.

September Ruby is starting to drop. The fruit would be larger if I thinned it to one apple.

Not fruit tree related, but I will throw the picture on here since I have no longer updated the Sandbox Land Tour.

My wife spends lots of time taking care of the flowers around this old building. Bandit is the Supervisor.

When I said they ripen very late October / 1st half of November - that's at our camp in NC Pa. mountains - not where we live in SE Pa. I wanted to clarify that for you, Teeder. Probably a more accurate timing for where you're located.
