Crabapple timeline

From FB. I see the same thing. I find larger apples under trees with a bite taken out of them. I don’t see that with Chestnut, Trailman,Rescue, Big Dog, Buckman Crab, Dolgo, or any of the various applecrabs.

I do think some apples will out produce crabs. There are many variables involved.

Taste may vary with rootstock, soils, climate, and seasonal variation.

Northland is ripe but only dropping a few apples. I see that it may hold fruit for quite a period of time.

I like the flavor as well.

Got a mcintosh loaded with scab, much like golden delicious and macoun are too.

Might be a good one for me. Got chestnut, williams pride, trailman, and redfree as early apple at home. I imagine that is good in zone 3. Besides 1 trailman, antonovka and dolgo oseedlings are my only early trees at camp.

Any MN 1734 at your place sandbur? Got one from saint lawrence nursery this spring. Growing good so far.

Not saying crabs aren't a better option, but I don't see deer "choking down" apples as they eat them. They apple sauce them in a few chomps which normally takes 10-15 seconds. Then they do again a time or two more. Definitely plant them both.

My buddy and I have had the same discussion on another site. He said that at his former place, deer would always fish one variety of large apple out of a pile of various apples.

I wonder if old does train fawns to go to certain trees first. Persists for generations.

Dolgo juice was made this morning and my wife canned it. All of the jars sealed.

Now we are making apple pie/ apple crisp mix for the freezer. Mostly Prairie Magic and Hazen going into this.

What's the process for freezing apple pie/ apple crisp mix? We've never frozen any.

We do not use the Nutmeg. My wife cooks the mix on the stove but leaves the apples just slightly crunchy. Let it cool and freeze in zip lock bags.

It’s easy to make apple crisp with this mix. I sneak in the freezer and break a chunk off to add to oatmeal or just to eat as is.

First year of any significant fruit. I should have sampled the apples a week ago. They quickly turn soft and have started to drop.

I am not impressed with this variety.

Guessing whomever wrote that article visits the fruit section on this forum once in awhile.

Maybe the author should have gotten your permission before listing all the ones you've named lol.

Seems to be a fan of Midwest deer trees and blue hill wildlife nursery among others

I broke a frozen chunk off last night. Microwaved a bit, added oatmeal and walnuts, then called it apple crisp. Added milk.

I eat old fashioned oatmeal every morning and never cook it. I eat it as cold cereal with fruit and walnuts.

Trailman is the second best tasting applecrab, IMO.

Tomorrow morning’s project is apple sauce from a mixture of Trailman and Dolgo.

For me, it is chestnut crab. I have been sampling a few off of the south side of the tree. There are very few drops yet.
