Conspiracy theorys, where do you stand?

Stats for Univ of Illinois ... scroll to bottom to see data on Univ of Michigan and others for comparison. Yep, a sizable group of Asians (China, India, Japan,Korea); however not all Chinese

I don't think it will happen anytime soon, but if the prestige of a US education wears off, it is going to hurt us in more ways than one.
Very good post. And the quote above concerns me. American exceptionalism has depended on many things but innovation is one of them. We decry “the government poring money into Silicon Valley” but the synergistic effects of universities, industry/tech and our governments mutually beneficial relationships benefits each and every one of us.

When my brother graduated HS 22 years ago, he had applied to U of I and didn't get accepted. His ACT was 26 (good but not great) and had nearly a 4.0 gpa. Classmates did get accepted who were behind him in those categories as well as class rank. They were minorities and he was white.

Really interesting. Was on campus 5-6 years ago. Almost ran over about 7 very international looking students who would burst out in front of my F-250 with their heads buried in their phones in the crosswalk without looking. Tried to send our daughter there to get a good degree, play sports and represent her own state. Everything about that school seemed vapor locked. Financial aid, sports money, the coach just couldn’t make anything happen for a qualified student athlete from their own state. Falling all over student athletes from California that didn’t make it to Christmas break.

Ended up sending her to SEC. It was cheaper, she had a fantastic experience, she ended up playing 4 years of d1 sports and working for the athletic department. Was mentored by some great people. College town was so much nicer than Champaign. No libby-libby leftwing demonstrations on campus. So glad that Illinois didn’t work out.

Champaign is a dump. Iowa City, Ames, Lexington, Tuscaloosa, hope he ended up someplace nice.

It sure is a dump. I've been there a few times. It's gross. He ended up where I was, at Illinois State. He went into criminal justice. Spent his first year in the field spying on insurance frauds. Came out with some great stories. Now he's at AJG helping settle the disputes from his home office.

My other daughter is a Redbird. I don’t mind Normal.

Mortenson & Westwind ... many of the students at IL State are highly qualified students who didn't make it into the U of I for a variety of reasons.
In fact, the U of I and ISU are considered as the 2 schools of choice - for many state residents - in the State of Illinois. Most other "regional" state schools (e.g., SIU, WIU, EIU, / NIU not so much) have wrestled with declining enrollments from the hey-days of the 1980-2020 period. Only the U of I and ISU experienced minimal effects on enrollment numbers. In spite of increased demand, ISU capped enrollment at around 18500 because of - largely - geography (Watterson Towers - the worlds largest undergraduate dorm). A smaller, more personalized campus with the benefits of a large university. SIU Carbondale is a great example... in 1991 it boasted almost 25,000 students; yet, by 2016 (25 years later) the total enrollment had fallen to less than 16,000 students. Illinois State University and University of Illinois both reported record-high freshman enrollments in 2016. For WIU, the highest year enrollment was in 1973 when they enjoyed almost 15,500 students on campus. Their fall 2024 enrollment was less than 8000 students. A variety of factors influence these numbers including, for example, changing demographics (fewer high school graduates), transportation costs (400+ miles from Chicago to Carbondale), increased competition (U of I Springfield and Bradley/ISU probably hurt WIU's recruiting efforts in Springfield and Peoria. An interesting aspect of WIU - in the context of international students discussed above - is the fact that 58% of their students report white as their race while less than 2% report as Asians.
The big question for potential applicants, and their parents concerns the quality of an education from one of these schools. The best rule of thumb is to go to the best school where you get accepted as a student.

U S News & World Report ranking results ...
School Ranking ... as a National University ... U of I / 33 ... ISU / 220 ... NIU / 273 ... SIU / 288 ... WIU / ranked as a regional univ midwest 38
School rank as a top public school ... U of I / 9 ... ISU / 119 ... NIU / 153 ... SIU / 155 ... EIU ranked as a regional university midwest / 54

Mort & West ... I'd say you made good choices!

I know ISU was very well run at the time my daughter went there 2016-2020. I can’t think of any negatives about her time there.

ISU is kind of an unsung gem really.

Not a huge fan of the city and suburbs but I gotta admit the Northwestern campus looks like a place even a country dude could have four years of fun. And get one heck of a degree. Probably not getting out of there without gobs of debt though.

I had some good classes at Western in the 80’s. But I also had a totally overqualified instructor at a community college. Former prison warden, stuff she taught I use to this day. Community colleges and college classes in high school are the best bargain oiut there and can be the best classes you attend.

We got to the bottom of this which is super important for our country. But those pesky Epstein files remain a mystery

Aliens corrupted the SD card from my trail camera, and apparently they're from the future.

Pablo Escobar was weird about toilets. Even when he was on the run changing safe houses he wanted a new toilet in every place that no one else was allowed to use.

I think I heard Dr Phil was weird about that too. Went crazy on his staff awhile back for someone using his "personal" bathroom.

1.7 million Ukrainian soldiers dead or missing. 7-8% of their population.

Lady G should be ashamed of himself for cheering this on.

It seems like the document that "doesn't exist", turned into the "Democrat hoax", and now is a "hostile act against the White House". What a sequence of events.
