Bluehill 2025

Nice kerr there.

I topworked a tree with kerr scion this spring. A few pieces have 2 or 3 little apples on them already.

I went to check orchard today and have dead crab apple from Bluehill but not their fault I am betting all the roots are ate off the way can move entire tree around. This year I think theres more things trying to kill fruit trees than let them grow.

I’ve lost one tree each of the last two years to gophers. I’m a murderer now. I put a large effort into those bastards this spring. Will do again later in the summer.

It's always something, Kooch. Gophers, mice, voles, bugs, bears, coons ...... why can't the critters go ga-ga over pigweed, ferns, or buckthorn, or Japanese stilt grass, or barberry?? Best of luck with your gopher campaign!

My 1st Kerr finally has a decent crop this year. Can't wait to try 1.

In my picture, the center leader is tipped from the fruit load. For several years since, I have stripped the blossoms or fruit off of the central leader to grow a taller tree. I can no longer reach the leader, even from our longest step ladder, so it is on it’s own.

I pulled a 10 foot conduit off of it. I had tied the leader to the conduit.

Chestnut crab has done this as well and also Frostbite and Hazen. Centennial, too.

Any tips on how to get a Kerr to look like that? Like fertilizing/spraying schedule..every guy on here probably had a major case of tree envy..(I know I do)…
Look at the size of the tree vs the trunk and how many vertical shoots are off the laterals. Bet he's worn out a few felco's over the years.

I think it's probably voles that get the roots as it's only happened on 3 trees I think.I have sandy ground and we have quite a few pocket gophers in the next section over as I trap them in a cemetery for the township. The best gopher trap is the black box.I have caught around 30 and usually catch the ones making the mounds in 1 or 2 days as they travel quite a bit.

He mentioned 2 big things, removing the flower and staking the tree. Staking prevents the roots from getting beat up in the wind. Can be a 2 edged sword too, not making a sturdy root system. I put them on stakes for 3-4 years. Removed about 20% of them this spring. Some were just rotted.

I think with sandburs convesations on here, he tried a few rootstocks and found what his land likes. Thinking my heavy clay soil might of done better on antonovka than m111. Just gettig that taproot into that heavy clay layer. IF they runt out a bit on m111, I think I'll be ok with it.

Frostbite scion didnt take this year. Hunting club only has kerr and a mn 1734 for edible apples, besides antonovka seedlings without anything grafted to them.

Well we had 15 inches of rain since memorial day and then between 60 and 80 MPH winds the other night. Finally got across creek tonight and 2 really nice crab apples or tipped.I am going to try and pull up tomorrow and drive T post around them for stakes to see if I can get them to stay alive. They are about 10 years old and heavy producers.

If you straighten them up and tamp the ground down around them - then stake them - they ought to survive. We had one pulled over horizontally by an accident with a tractor pulling a mower deck, and it lived. Keep the faith, brother!

I ordered 2 sweet advent, 2 hunters deer pear, 1 szukis persimmon and 1 tin cup persimmon. The persimmons are more if an experiment but overall I am very happy with the trees I got from BH. One pear was slow to wake up and both persimmons were slow but we've had good rain of late and all trees planted are looking great.

The pears I got were slow to wake up too, but looking great now. Persimmons always seem late for me.
