Bluehill 2025

I've never ordered from Bluehill. Are the more expensive sizes worth the extra cost? I'm planning to order approx 6-8 trees. Half persimmon and half crabapples.
From my experience last year buying several select trees and normal size trees, definitely not worth it. Thats all I have to say...

Oof kind of glad I'm out of room at this point. Some are $70-80 each.

I just need 1 Full Draw or Deer Luscious persimmon to replace one that died over winter.

Well, I just got notice that they were available because I requested it awhile back. Ordered my persimmon!

Got my order in. Something was up with the site, because it was showing some of the trees were out of stock, but if you clicked into the tree and selected a size, they were in stock.

Right. I thought since I was only getting a couple I would get a larger size, but only the 2-3' trees were available.
Yet again, I think this will fill out my fruit deer plot. ( until next year, of course) 😏

Somewhere on FB he said he would only list about half the persimmon and chestnuts, as they were still growing. The rest would be posted closer to fall.

I will probably hold off on ordering this year, although some of those new varieties look tempting! I exchanged scion with Ryan last spring and was able to get a few varieties that I had yet to order - Sweet Dog, Yates, and Candy Crab. Had some issues getting the Yates scion to take, but for the most part all the grafts were successful and are growing well.

hoosiehunter,

You young tree you order is limited by the roots. Larger trees and smaller trees are dug up the same size usually. I prefer smaller trees with good root systems. Some places you cn buy larger trees and pick up, they might be worth it. They are limited by the shipping box.

Smaller trees usually have less branch issues you need to correct with a pruning shear too.

Im good with trees for awhile. Got plenty t home and a decent selection at camp too. NEed to find good places to put more trees If I want more up there. Its a lease, so I am limited to what I can and cant do up there. A few foodplots n trees in already open areas is ok though.

I'm glad this was posted. I've tried to get some grafted persimmons for the last couple of years and have been too late. I planted some seedlings from Oikos about 10 years ago that are doing great, but I'd like to topwork some. I ordered 2-3 each of the available varieties from Bluehill. Has anybody had any in the ground for awhile in 5b or colder? Also, has anybody planted the Bluehill seedling persimmons? Looks like they should be pretty cold tolerant.

I ordered 9 trees today. Expensive hobby. But cheaper than hookers I guess.

2 sweet dog
2 big dog
2 Kerr
2 Buckman
1 dolgo

I have a couple BH persimmons in the ground that are in their 3rd year. 7-8' tall. Zone 5a-b.

I did order the Happy Valley tree. As a PSU alumni, I had to pull the trigger. I just ordered 1 less tree.
Hmm? I missed that one.

Looks like a massive producer. Only a few left. Limited stock this year as a new offering.

There are thousands of apples varieties in the world. Dont need those 4 or 5 for $70 each. Pretty much every one was a wild n free tree..... Half of what he offers is commercially available varieties anyways.

Never ordered from midwest deer trees, but his stuff looks pretty good. I have more of those trees varieties grafted than bluehill's. Big dog courthouse and buckman.

Lots of places out there selling enterprise, galarina, kerr, and plenty of other good ones and sell rootstocks too in one place.

Saint lawrence has their on anty or siberian crab and are half price of bluehill's. Been very happy with turkey creeks trees and rootstock options too.

Most of the trees aren't $70. They're around $40, similar to St Lawrence. Part of the draw to me is, I can avoid shipping by picking up. Most of the two year old trees I've picked up barely fit into the truck with the cap on. We're talking 6'-8' tall two year olds. I've noticed that two year old trees just seem to take off vs the 1 year olds I've planted.
