Bark id

I should have taken pics of this trees stem arrangement, but didn't. Can someone id this or narrow it down by its bark. I have quite a few of these trees. I thought sourwood at first, but some are pretty large.

I'm almost certain it's sassafras. If so, I've got some really big ones that I'll probably get rid of to make room for some seedling white oaks.

I was thinking sassafras too. Leaves on the ground should help you tell for sure.

Find a limb off of it and snap it....then smell it where it was broken. It should have a "rootbeer" type smell to it if it is sassafras.
