B-118 Rootstocks

Dantana,

Anything growing good on B118?

I asked sandbur his adivce on his B118 rootstock he grew without grafting to maturity. He didn't like it. So, I had 1 B118 I didn't graft a few days agp, I topworked it to buckman. Scion looked better than big dog.
They have been good growers, I will give them that. Pretty quick to produce until the bears found them. My grafted trees on Antonovka have grown pretty well. Last year's grafts on M111 were still very small by summer's end. Much smaller than the grafts on Antonovka the year before, which put on upwards of 3ft of growth.

My straight B118’s grew well and I haven’t had significant problems with them.

Perhaps I misunderstood your question. I was not very impressed with the fruit or the amount of production of B118’s. I am referring to non grafted B118’s.

Interesting comment about Anty not liking lower pH. I can remember reading that crab apple rootstocks might handle one half unit lower pH. Trees on Anty are often a struggle for me.

Those on ranetka, dolgo, native crabs, seem to do well.

I can second your thoughts on Anty Bur....maybe lol. Is it the rootstocks or just my glacial till being so variable being only 40 ft away from others growing faster. But have at least 1/2 doz SLN apple trees and they always claimed to use mostly Anty for those. They haven't died but sure take their time to grow. My one tree from them doing much better is a winter wildlife really a crab and think they tend to use crab roots for those.

The crab seedlings I have have done very well here. The Siberian, ranetka, red splendor types. And kudos to Whitetail Crabs as their stuff whether apples or crabs has performed great. Think they might tend to use Dolgo along with some B118

I have a few friends that are using red splendor seedlings for rootstocks. Anyone try them?
