B-118 Rootstocks

Dantana,

Anything growing good on B118?

I asked sandbur his adivce on his B118 rootstock he grew without grafting to maturity. He didn't like it. So, I had 1 B118 I didn't graft a few days agp, I topworked it to buckman. Scion looked better than big dog.
They have been good growers, I will give them that. Pretty quick to produce until the bears found them. My grafted trees on Antonovka have grown pretty well. Last year's grafts on M111 were still very small by summer's end. Much smaller than the grafts on Antonovka the year before, which put on upwards of 3ft of growth.

My straight B118’s grew well and I haven’t had significant problems with them.

Perhaps I misunderstood your question. I was not very impressed with the fruit or the amount of production of B118’s. I am referring to non grafted B118’s.

Interesting comment about Anty not liking lower pH. I can remember reading that crab apple rootstocks might handle one half unit lower pH. Trees on Anty are often a struggle for me.

Those on ranetka, dolgo, native crabs, seem to do well.

I can second your thoughts on Anty Bur....maybe lol. Is it the rootstocks or just my glacial till being so variable being only 40 ft away from others growing faster. But have at least 1/2 doz SLN apple trees and they always claimed to use mostly Anty for those. They haven't died but sure take their time to grow. My one tree from them doing much better is a winter wildlife really a crab and think they tend to use crab roots for those.

The crab seedlings I have have done very well here. The Siberian, ranetka, red splendor types. And kudos to Whitetail Crabs as their stuff whether apples or crabs has performed great. Think they might tend to use Dolgo along with some B118

I have a few friends that are using red splendor seedlings for rootstocks. Anyone try them?

Been trying to get my mitts on red splendor. I'd do both with them.

I was refering to B118 as a seedling. I took your advice and grafted it. Had some buckman scion left.

B118 has alot of positives, so it's worth trying to find a way to utilize them.

Some local Soil and Water Conservation Districts sell bundles of 25 red splendor. There are restrictions on how these trees can be used.

I haven’t had any issues with b118 leaning . Here is supposedly a B118 root that I noticed this weekend. It’s a Franklin cider that was absolutely loaded with blossoms and was in the tail end of the bloom cycle. I really like the Franklin for wildlife.

How's your soil kickapookid? Use fertilizer and lime much? Thinking that's part of b118's issue

I grafted some p18 this year to compare, anybody got mature tree pics? Guy from mehrabyan nursery recommended p18 for low pH soil.

Willy,

Got any pics of these open center trees? Also how's your soil and use of fertilizer. B118 was designed for poor csandy soil.

There is loamy well drained soils where we are on the ridge in southwest Wisconsin. I will usually fertilize and lime my trees every 3-4 years. I just put fertilizer and lime down for the first time on 3 new crabs trees planted in spring 2024.

I just got on here tonight and saw the question. I'll take some pics when I get back to the farm. Just got back tonight. As far as fertilizer. I put some 10-10-10 on them years 3 and 4 and then walked away except for cage upkeep and pruning.

Haven't fertilized yet this year. Usually lime and fertilize annually.
