atv setup for food plots

There seems to be an inverse relationship between equipment and results.

I prefer atvs because most of my land is wooded and the only plots I have are along powerline easements. I considered a tractor but then needed a heavy duty trailer to haul it back and forth from my land plus storage problem since I live in town. If i had a pole shed on my land and 5 acres of plots, then id go the tractor route. 1 to 2 acres of hunting plots and atv, then all i do is use a 25 gallon sprayer and hand seeder. Spray june 1st, spray and plant brassicas august first, more cereal grain planting September 1st. I plant about an acre and have maybe 2 to 3 hours into it per year and dont have any plans to change that process. Im also doing other work that requires an atv on the days im doing plots - i definetly wouldnt want to trailer an atv plus a tractor. If I was buying a tractor, it would be an older 40 hp like an oliver 550.

I’ve been doing plots with atv’s for years. I have a groundhog max disk, drag harrow, sprayer and broadcast seeder. I’d use a tractor if I had one and had a place to store it but honestly not every food plot needs to be disked. And I’m learning and taking that approach more and more each year. You can get results with a sprayer and broadcast seeding. Deer don’t need perfectly manicured food plots and sometimes broadleaf weeds aren’t a bad thing. If your looking to use the atv for other uses. Trail riding etc. Get that you’ll still get results.

I plant food plots every year with my ATV. Total of 8 acres. About 8 hours to plant beans in late May. About 1 .5 houIMG_2569.JPGrs to spray in June and about 8 hours to plant brassicas in late July. I challenge any one to get nicer looking plots done with tractors than this. Been doing it for 16 years with the same Honda Rubicon.

Great looking plot! What's the brassicas?

What do you use for implements?

That year I used Shot Plot. Since then I use my own mix as Shot Plot kept changing their mix. The last 4 or 5 years I have been using a mix of Purple top turnips, T-Raptor and Ground Hog Radish.

Honda Rubicon
Loyal Roth ATV disc
Loyal Roth Funnel Spreader
Home made Cultipacker
Fimco Sprayer
Solo Hand seeder
That Loyal Roth disk is bad ass man.

Terrific Tom: Great plots and nobody is going to touch those with a tractor.

Here’s the start of my atv plot this year. I’ve been basically hand tools previously. Backpack sprayer and bag seeder. Bought atv sprayer, spreader, and a drag this year. We have a little scut now with a tiller but it’s tough in our hilly ground on the tiller. Hoping to get a disc someday although it’s probably not necessary for successful plots. I’ve been doing hand ones for years.

I’ll plant a 1/2 acre brassica plot this year with a quad and a rear mounted sprayer teamed with my crimper in less than an hour.

That will be for broadcasting seed, rolling/crimping, and spraying

Very nice,I am looking for a dual boom sprayer for my utv,I always used a boomless before.

Does anyone plant brassicas and/or clovers with their ATV spreader on small plots- say 1 acre? I just got an atv spreader which I love for fertilizer (which I dont do much) and rye. But I go to the solo hand spreader for clovers and brassicas.

What kind of sprayer? Any tips or suggestions?

We've had this older Fimco 25 gal sprayer for probably 15yrs, replaced pump once and some fittings and nozzles but it's been preety good over all. This is an old pic but it's held down with a couple ratchet straps, one thing that I'd change is the "L" bracket holding the sprayer arms because it's not real heavy guage metal and it bends easily with just the weight of the arms and bouncing so you have to straighten it out.
