30-06 ammo for elk

Ok thanks for the info, im new to the rifle thing because we were shotgun only for deer hunting up to a few years ago. I think I'm going to get some of what you mentioned above and see what I like on target.

Sounds good. The further the distance, the less desirable the performance on the barnes stuff gets externally and terminally. 400 yards aint a chip shot for the vast majority of hunters regardless of what equipment they have.
 
My friend shot a very large cow elk last fall with an '06. He used a Winchester 180 grain power point of all things. It's what his gun liked. Bullet mushroomed perfectly after coming to rest just under the skin opposite of the entrance.
