2025 Scion Exchange

Dumb question but I have to ask as I've never done it before, what is the best way to ship scion wood? They are currently wrapped in saran wrap in the fridge.

Wrapped in saran or place in a ziploc is most desirable. Shipped in a bubble mailer is common practice.

Sealed baggy with a damp paper towel

I seal ends, put in a sealed bag, and then put a wet paper towel squeezed out in a smaller bag inside the bigger bag.

Some use beeswax, plain candle wax, or even latex paint. I use doc farrell's hea n seal. Basically latex paint with the insecticide permetherin. Permetherin is more for outside use.

Looking for freedom, keener, Betsy Deaton and smokey mountain limbertwig if anyone has any scions available.
I had a terrible hail storm come through last spring and annihilate many of my younger trees. I pruned heavily and hoping for the best but the ones I list above didn't make it. Going to top work them from the bases and hope for the best

Turkey creek treesin kansas had scions for sale on their email list flyer. I just recieved some. He sells freedom and keener. Dont know the other two. He was very reasonably priced and the scions looked great.

I can take any and all pear scions people can spare for my wild Callery grafting project. I will try to do a post on that soon. I found a couple hundred young seedling Callery pears on some abandoned soccer fields. I'm trying to turn it into a huge edible pear grove for the local wildlife and people and drown out the pure Callery genes.
Telemark you still in need of pear scions

I just sent him a bunch of Asian pear scions

IF possible watch the tree, see the buds startibg to leaf out, thats rime. Mouse ears. Too early and the union dries out bwfore tree wakes up. 3rd week in april through 1sr week in may my guess.

If camp is far away maybe find a nearby online camera and watch tree n shrub progress. Probably 2-3 weeks behind what a maple tree does.

Thanks. I am going to take 4 wild crabs that I have and graft some desirables onto them

Any chance someone has a few pieces of Persimmon Scion available still? I know I am late to the game...

Other than cutting scion, I havent even thought of grafting yet. Rootstock that I ordered from Mehrayban is supposed to ship today. Will hopefully get those graft over the next week. Top working is still a few weeks out yet. It's mid 60's today but potential snow storms coming tomorrow. Got to love MIchigan weather!

I’ve bark grafted all my apples and pears I’m doing for this year in a week or two I’ll do my pecans

Besides getting into a car accident today, I managed to grafted a failed m111 into violi's, topworked a torgino into a "later dolgo", A frameworked a rusty pristine into a trailman with a branch of buckman and AWHO. Still need to topwork that rusty droptine. Mostly kerr with a branch of turning point, keepsake and courthouse crab. Sandbur hit the nail n the head with a few varieties.

Tempted to order from chief river some red splendor to put at camp and topwork a dolgo. With luck it's neighbor at home will be Adirondack crab on M111.

Not so scionie, but does anyone have a zone 3 mulberry tree. Something that can survive -35 to -50 deg F spells? Got northrup mulberry. However, they're females. The idea is to get self seeding fruit trees at camp. So I need some seeds to make a few males. Mulberry females will fruit, but will not be viable seed w/o males.

Any other fruiting mulberry will also be female. Just buy some Russian mulberry seedlings and hope at least one survives, and that it's male. About 50% of seedling mulberries are male.
