2 Favorite plinking guns?

Debating what to get next for a gun. Got my needs covered, like we all do. Just looking for some fun shooting. Torn between 223 or a lever gun. Prefer to get the calibers my son in law likes, so he can use them someday down the road. He's got a 357 lever gun and a 2 38 pistols. He also has an AR or two. Probably get a basic bolt gun like another axis or maybe a ruger american. Don't like that accutrigger.

What are your 2 favorites? Right now, I like to shoot a cz 452 ultra lux 22lr with iron sights, usually at 50 yard 1.5" little gong and 100 yards at a 6" gong.

My other favorite is a SKS, usually hit that same 6 inch gong offhand, and the 10 inch gong at 230 yards from the bench. Although the flintlocks seem to come out of the safe more often.

The question is regarding plinking guns, which are most frequently 22LR due to the cost of ammo and noise. You can get 22LR on just about any frame—from ARs rifles to 1911 pistols. My favorite plinking guns are semi-auto 22LR rifles, such as the Ruger 10/22 or my vintage Remington Nylon 66.

For larger caliber fun it’s hard to beat the AR platform. Ammo is reasonable and the ones I have are very reliable (Colt LE version). To impress friends I pull out the S&W 500 revolver and rifle, plus they are fun to shoot.

SKS, AR, 1911, lever are all great platforms!

.22 is by far what we shoot the most. Followed by .223 and 9mm.

Semi auto 22 pistols, primarily MkII and Buckmarks, the plinkiest of plinkers.
Bolt action 22LR.

45 auto loaded with 185s and 3.5gr of clays.

I think shotguns are very overlooked for plinking. Shells are cheap, guns aren't loud, recoil is manageable, and a whole new dimension is added when you start throwing targets (can be as simple as dirt clods if you want).

I just bought a Turkish 9mm for $250, and holy cow is that a great plinker. I also loaned my brother in law's full-auto 5.56, and it's a different, more expensive kind of plinker, but easily more fun.

Both were insanely expensive.

I agree with those who encourage you to shoot 22LR and 12ga trap loads.

I have a cheaper compressed air rifle that is a great plinker for around the house.

S&W 15-22 with a cheap red dot is the best plinker I’ve ever had.

A good .22 is the ultimate plinker.
My most recent ( too early to tell if it's a favorite) is a Marlin 39D. Sweet little lever!

My favorite is a Savage bolt action .17 rimfire I paid less than $200 for years ago. It has a 3x9 Loopy on it and I feel like I can’t miss with it. It poofs things with feathers and wrecks yard animals. It’s kind of loud for a porch gun though.

Last summer I went crazy and bought a .25 Ghost pcp air gun and a scuba tank. Bolt action repeater and very quiet. Ultimate porch gun, doesn’t wake-up the kids while the yard runs red with squirrel blood lol. Kinda expensive but it has provided a lot of hours of entertainment.

I took video of shooting off my back deck and the doe/fawn in the food plot 70 yards away didn’t even look up. As long as I don’t rattle pellets through the trees they could care less.

I was poking around looking for a single shot .410 today that could ride the mower with me. That would be perfect for the reptiles I can’t get to with mower blades.

My favorite 2 plinkers are in the same gun....I've got a little Stevens double barrel .22 / .410. Break action with a selector for the top barrel (.22) or the bottom (.410). After deer season ends on Dec. 31st I pretty much carry it every day when I walk the dogs. I use it to practice snap shots and/or take a pop at the occasional snowshoe.

I always wanted one of those! Y’know, I’m going to work on that.

My dad has one .22 mag on top barrel, 20 gauge on bottom. Used it a lot when I was trapping as a kid. Gave me a chance to shoot quail/rabbits/ducks while walking a line.

I just gave one like that to my grandson at Christmas. Mine had a 223 on top of a 20 gauge. Nice combo for coyote hunting......but I thought it was pretty heavy to carry too much. Mine carried a 3-9 power scope and see thru rings. It was pretty accurate. Remembering which way to flip that little firing pin lever was a bit confusing for me if I was not using it too often.

I have some Marlin lever action guns in 357 and in 22 lr. Those are my favorite plinking guns....and a joy to carry / shoot. Considering passing them on to my grandkids too. We are downsizing our life style.

Ha! As an 8yr old walking a trap line with a bucket full of lures/shifter/hammer/fold-up shovel... that gun felt heavy as all get-out!

Had a savage 24v 30-30/20ga. Had problems firing the 30-30. Light strikes.

Think the 22lr/20ga would be the best.

Yeah, I don't trap, but I can see how it would be the absolutely perfect gun to have while trapping. .22 over 20 would be nice.
