wet feet

Im taking training courses at work so im bored.
Half my chestnut seedlings died this past winter/spring. I almost positive it was from wet feet. Are they just susceptible when first planted or could build raised mounds with wood to keep them out of the "wetsoil" until the roots get going in a couple of years?
thanks

Plant them on well drained north and east facing slopes

Jack has posted his methods for planting in heavy clay soils to avoid pooling/ponding

Just curious, why north and east facing slopes?

Just curious, why north and east facing slopes?

Because of unrelenting sun/heat on south/west slopes in the torid, harsh summers of east texas

The lack of rain from july through october further diminishes margin of safety

A challenge, but i'm on a mission.......

PS apologies to Willie

Chestnuts don’t like wet feet at all..and they don’t do that great in clay.
They sure do love drier loamy sandy dirt though!
