Lookin' great, Dan. Are you expecting any fruit this year, or is that still another year or two away?

    Poor soil fertilizing

I would tell you to sell your land and give up hunting, before I'd recommend planting rye GRASS, of any kind. Winter rye (grain) is exceptional on horrible soils, which you truly do not have. With high pH soils, I would amend accordingly for P and K, then include alfalfa in any perennial plot...

    Poor soil fertilizing

You have soil in Indiana that has a neutral pH, but low nutrient levels? That is a most unusual circumstance. How have you determined that your nutrient levels suck? Do you have the results from a proper soil survey or is this an anecdotal observation of how something grew? I'm in central IN and...

Food Plot Ideas that won't get scorched

I have not read all of the replies, but two things jump out at me. 1. You have tons of property around your place to provide summer food sources, so don't bother with those. Wait until late summer or fall to plant a browse-tolerant mix. 2. You're planting ice cream crops when you know your...

    Dad always told me....

I think they like the taste of mosquito larvae! In all seriousness, moving water creates noise and air currents that compromise a deer's best defenses. I'm sure it's an evolutionary adaptation that deer which choose still waters live longer and procreate more successfully. Sent from my...

    Testing out RootMaker knit bags

I tried a similar direct seed approach one year and critters got every nut. :( You may want to consider a hardware cloth cover? Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk

    Food plots and acorns

Native, have you observed any distinct preference by deer for the chestnuts when they are dropping? In your estimation, are deer more attracted to acorns, food plots, chestnuts, or any other single source, when all are present? Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk

    Trees for sandy soil

Of all the trees I've planted on really sandy soil, hazelnut seem to be doing the best. They are a very good overall wildlife tree/shrub, although deer won't hit them too hard. Managed properly, they make a great living hedge/screen. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk

    The Throw n’ Mow Method

Forgive me if this has already been covered, but has anyone compared the use of a rotary mower and a flail mower? Supposedly the flail mower will leave behind smaller bits that mulch better and is less prone to creating windrows? Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk

Help me decide what to plant for next season!!!

If I had a dime for every time someone was convinced "their" deer didn't eat (insert food plot item here)... Even with 10 cameras on 4 acres of ground, and being able to watch parts of it from your house, you are still only capturing a tiny fraction of the actual deer movement and utilization...

Help me decide what to plant for next season!!!

Was the winter rye you planted all by itself? I thought you said it was a nurse crop? Weren't the deer in there eating the other stuff you planted? You will eventually realize that observation is not always utilization. Being in a northern climate, I can assure you that when everything...

Help me decide what to plant for next season!!!

I gather from your comments that your main goal is to attract deer to your property at optimal hunting times. With that in mind, the plan you have is a good one. I think having half of your total acreage in clover is too much...I would leave the best one growing and optimize the other acre for...

    Plot updates

It can be really difficult to know how much certain types of plants are being browsed unless you have an exclusion cage in place. You might be surprised how much deer are already hitting it. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk

Poor Soil Frost Seeding options... more than clover?

I'd throw down some Alsike...it does well enough on low pH, wet ground. Bigger concern is aal the poplar that will come up. Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk

    Triticale

I have planted it in northern Michigan and had very good results with it. Rye is better on really poor soils. I have not observed a big difference in price or utilization between rye and triticale, but I tell myself it's more preferred, on soil with the nutrients for it to flourish. Sent from...

    Dolomitic limestone vs. aglime

Is "ag lime" ever dolomitic lime? The main thing for the OP to understand is that the ratio between calcium and magnesium, in your soil, is important. Ample amounts of both is good, but too much of one without enough of the other will lower your CEC, which is the best measure of how well your...

    Pallets for cages?

Those pallet slats will be perfect places for mice and voles to build their home, well-protected from hawks and owls, plus they can chew on the tree trunks if they run out of other food. Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk
