Wisconsin Gun Opener 2024

Well, in a couple of days the Gun opener starts for us Wisconsin folks on Saturday. This event is one of the 3 major holidays this time of year. On Saturday, before sun up, around 600,000 well armed and slightly to greatly hungover, blaze orange clad hunters will descend upon Wisconsin fields, woods, and marshes in search of that thirty point buck.

I am already at camp getting things ready, made 1.5 gal of chilli, and hot beef will start tomorrow. Will go out for traditional fish fry tomorrow night with the boys. I have brought up enough food for 2 weeks and I am sure everyone else will bring more. There will be enough cheese, sausage, pickled stuff, and other goodies eaten to block the digestive system up for several days.

Weather looks good. Latest possible opener usually results in low sightings and harvest numbers but we seem to have a good number of deer using the property. I didn't get my buck with the bow this year and I don't plan on going without venison in 2025 so I won't be picky with the rifle. Looking forward to some ice cold drinks, good food, and without a doubt a whole lot of ball busting.

Deer numbers are lower than normal at my rusk county place, but my dad and I will give it a shot anyway. The food will likely be the highlight of the weekend, we are having rib eye steaks on the grill one night and some chicken wings and shrimp the other night.

I don’t know about those jarred goodies but good luck all!

Numbers seem lower as well at my property in St Croix Cty this year. I know a close by farmer lets whoever he knows/whoever wants to hunt, hunt. Last year, a rowdy bunch did a drive before noon on opening day. I wasn’t a big fan, but it honestly probably saves some deer by pushing them out early to safer, better managed lands. Anyway, bring on Saturday!

My neighbor claims he saw a buck last weekend with 16" G2s in the field I'll be hunting along the edge of. I am skeptical, but he must have seen some sort of good buck. Regardless, we are going to get by on prime rib for a few days here in deer camp thanks to my wife. After that, its brats and sauerkruat for a few days, followed by turkey. The Packers game starts at 3:25 this Sunday, so we'll be back in camp for the second half.

Can't wait. Oldest is home from college, youngest has a f'ing basketball scrimmage at 8 30 tomorrow morning.... New coach is a millennial,obviously doesn't hunt!! Sooo I guess I'll miss that game
Deer numbers are ok here, hoping for 2 more for the freezer but will be happy with whatever we get.

It's a little wetter than usual after the couple inches of wet heavy snow the other day, but the weather for the opener looks good.
