Walnut trees toxic to clover?

I have read that walnut trees give off a chemical from the roots and the fallen nuts that can inhibit the growth of some plants within their root or drop zone. Does anyone know of clover is susceptible to that? I have several walnut trees on the edge of what I want to be a clover plot

Interesting post. I have lots of walnuts, and lots of clover….I went outside and found little clover around the drip line of the walnuts, but plenty away from the clover.

I would not be concerned much beyond the drip line.

I think it’s mostly the walnut husks? I’m not sure that by itself would keep me from putting in that plot.

I have some walnuts along my driveway where I mow and I backpack blow them to the base of the tree and it does keep the weeds down most of the summer. I think the idea is the husk falls off, kills a little spot where the actual walnut can germinate and get a quick start

It's called juglone. Hulls, leaves, roots, and nuts. Park your truck under one for awhile. I've come to not like them. I'll never live long enough to sell one.

Very interesting and thank you all. I do notice that the drip line shows more effect. I may take these walnuts out. Sounds like clover is the way to go.
