Happy 3rd Bday to this common wild apple from U of Idaho. I planted this tiny little plug in spring of 2021. It turned 3 years old last Saturday. It blew out of the 5 foot tube with ease. I put a 5 foot cage around it last summer. Hopefully it will turn into something decent. It has seen some 19-19-19 fertilizer and a little bit of gypsum. It mostly gets full sun and and has had a weed mat since day 1.
Also, happy 2nd birthday to 18 of my 25 red splendor crab apple trees that I planted 2 years ago. Their birthday was also on Saturday. These have been excellent growers with 100% survival. Most of the 18-24" bareroots are now out of the 5 foot tube and getting ready to start their 3rd summer in my woods. I planted these mainly for grouse food.
These trees are tough as nails , I had one bend over and I cut it off … new growth on it already . Forgot to take a picture. This wet weather has them growing fast !!
Here is my best common wild apple planted in 2021. I have it planted in a tiny pocket of clover right next to a patch of switchgrass. I really hope it makes apples someday and drops them in October/November. I took these pictures last weekend. I have some swamp white oak and other common wild apple planted by this one and none of them are even remotely close to growing like this thing.
