University of idaho Wild Apples

Happy 3rd Bday to this common wild apple from U of Idaho. I planted this tiny little plug in spring of 2021. It turned 3 years old last Saturday. It blew out of the 5 foot tube with ease. I put a 5 foot cage around it last summer. Hopefully it will turn into something decent. It has seen some 19-19-19 fertilizer and a little bit of gypsum. It mostly gets full sun and and has had a weed mat since day 1.

Also, happy 2nd birthday to 18 of my 25 red splendor crab apple trees that I planted 2 years ago. Their birthday was also on Saturday. These have been excellent growers with 100% survival. Most of the 18-24" bareroots are now out of the 5 foot tube and getting ready to start their 3rd summer in my woods. I planted these mainly for grouse food.

Amazing growth . I had a few tip over on Iowa (Tube bent in 70 mph wind)

Hopefully they survive !
