Sulfur

I've been reading alot of the benefits of sulfur. I think I'm going to try to add some this year. I don't know if I can get kmag around me. I found some 90% pelitized sulfur pellets online. Would these work good or should I try to get ammonium sulfate or even just add a bunch of gypsum? I usually add pelitized lime in the spring. With sulfur being acidic would there be a problem with using lime also? Should the sulfur be added in the spring when I plant beans or fall before planting brassicas?

Before adding a chemical, see what your chemicals are now.

99% of the time sulphur has been properly added, its to acidify ypur soil. My local coop adds about 10% sulphur to their blueberry fertilizer.

Look up your soil type with usgs.

Certsin parys of the midwest the soil is a high pH. Like low to mid 8

I had a quick look at sulfur prices. I don't think you save any money buy adding sulfur and lime separately. I think financially you are better off buying a few sacks of sulfur at the local Tractor Supply.

This way you also get a form of sulfur that is already neutral in the soil.

Got a soil test result you can share?

I apply pelletized gypsum on alfalfa and turnip ground. You can get bagged gypsum at Jay-Mar in Plover. My ground is sand. If yours is loam or clay, you might not need any.

90% sulfur will take months to be available in the soil. If you're going to use it, do it now. It will lower pH.

I know I had one a couple years ago. This is the latest one I found. Kind of a generic test from biologic.

Why are you adding lime? I would add some gypsum and triple 13 and call it good.

This test is from.2019. I had spread 2 tons of ag per acre I believe in 2017. When I first started it was a 5.0. I had a test.done a couple years ago and I think.it was a 6.5. I usually just add 200lbs/ acre of pelitized to maintain.it. I've heard alot of people talk about sulfur making their brassicas "sweeter'. I belive they are also doing studies now on how adding sulfur can cut down on the amount of nitrogen you need for corn. I've also read how it can be used on lawns to green them up. I just thought I would give it a.try., I might just do a 1/2.test area to see.if I see a improvement.

Green cover did some testing on that a number of years back. It was a write up in one of their soil health guides. If I remember correctly, what they were testing was nitrogen rates with no sulfur, and then nitrogen rates with sulfur. What they found was they could achieve the same top end yields of full rate nitrogen and no sulfur, with just 20-25% of that N when paired with the right amount of sulfate sulfur.

It stuns me how many farm co-ops do not carry gypsum, and they are in heavy clay country. It's almost like the ivermectin of the fertilizer business. I keep telling people, throw down a $10 bill and spread a 40 lb bag in a small area and watch what happens.
