I have a bunch in my yard and it does well in part shade. Crush a leaf and smell it. Is it spicy? It looks like it to me. I have seen deer browsing it but they have lots of other preferences in my area.
Definately spicebush. I videoed deer targeting the leaves a few years ago. My deer eat the leaves, but I haven't seen much use of the woody browse.
I like that it offers low cover in shade where other stuff won't grow.
I found some pics from that video I took. This doe and her 2 fawns were definitely targeting spice bush. They hung around eating it for a while.
The last pic is actually her eating dead leaves from snake root. We were discussing snake root use the other day, so I thought I'd throw that pic in.
