Thanks Rocks for posting the pic of goldenrod / weeds in your spruce. ( post #20 ) That's a good visual. We have all kinds of weeds and goldenrod growing in among our spruce and deer seem to like it. I never realized how much they like it until another camp member and I were walking through one of our spruce patches during archery season about 10 years ago. We kicked out a bunch of deer that were bedded in tight to the spruce, laying in the weeds soaking up the sun. This happened several times over a couple years. Proof enough for this hunter.
I have to credit my Dad and uncle for showing me years ago that deer like to bed in pines & spruce. At a different location ( than my camp ), they walked me through a block of pitch pine, spruce and white pines that had weeds and goldenrod growing between the trees in small openings. Deer were in there like rabbits !! They explained why the deer like such areas to bed. I guess the " lesson " stuck !! That's why I plant such areas today at my camp.
