Skid steer vs 3 point tractor tillers

What are the big differences between a skid steer tiller and a 3 point tractor mounted tiller? The skid models seem lower priced. I've seen 4" and 7" depth tillage models. I'm assuming the 3 point models are more expensive/complex because they're powered by the PTO and need a gear box. True?

Have only used a 3pt with my tractor. If you plan to use it in harsh conditions I think the gear drive is a better option than the chain drive. With a skid steer you will be driving over the tilled ground and the tractor will be in front of the tiller so your tracks will be covered as long as your tiller is as wide or wider than the tractor tires. I would think that a skid steer might have some issues with traction also when you are trying to drive on top of freshly tilled ground. For tilling I would think the tractor would be a better option vs a skiddy. jmo

+1 for the tractor mounted IMO. Most skid steers are heavy and the compaction behind the tillage would be enough to deter me.

I pulled the trigger on a barely used "USA Wolverine" brand skidsteer tiller yesterday. For $800, it was too good of a deal to pass up. Most of the used ones I've seen are a deal at $1000. This one was allegedly only used once, and it looks that way. We're only really trying to till the top 4" on a few plots, and we think this will do the job. You can till in reverse, so you're not leaving tracks in the plot. All of the 3 point models I've seen are $2500 plus. It was hard to justify the cost difference.

Hope it works well for you. Let us know what you think after you use it for awhile.

Dad is taking it up tonight and giving it a whirl. We have one plot that's been disked a few weeks ago, some that are a mix of clover and too much grass, and a few virgin spots of grass to till. I'll have reports on a few days.
