Skid Steer Flail Mower (feedback wanted)

Was reading opinions of the experts. Laughable. I've used brush hogs and flail mowers and would take the flail option every time. Reviews are stating for large grassy areas the brush is a better choice. Must be sponsored by brush hog is all I can think.

Take a look at VICTORY. They look pretty good and are advertised as heavy duty. OOPS, looks like they are pto with HYDRAULIC shift.

SD, did you pull the trigger on the flail yet?

Oh hell no. If anything I’ve gotten further away. The throw and roll is looking so damn good, I may never buy a mower. This stuff takes years to understand the evolution that I may not know for another 1-2 years.

I haven’t settled on the perfect plot process yet, so I don’t know what equipment I’ll need to manage it. I’m really liking balansa for its transition traits. But I don’t know what’s gonna happen to my volunteer crop if those seed heads don’t get shredded by a mower.

I wish I had known this was gonna go like this, cause had I did, I would have put my triticale down before rolling.

When I mowed last year, I had so damn much clover it choked out 99% of my rye. This year I rolled and I’ve got very little clover and way too many oats.

I drove through the Brainerd General Rental yard today. I saw several near new ASV Skid steers on rubber tracks....and equipped with different heads. Talked to a worker in the yard....and he claimed you could do up to 6" trees with the hydraulic powered mower head. They also had an ASV Forestry Mulcher head (pictured) that has carbide teeth and could clear most any wood put in front of it. I did not ask a price on these.....but looks like a good solution for lots of us DIY'ers. Not sure the width......but it would appear to be about 6 to 7' wide.

Just FWIW....the price to buy one of these guy is not cheap. Anyone rented one?

I bet that thing costs $3k a day to rent.

Went to their website just now......and rental is far less than said here. 24 hours with mulch head is $1200. Can rent for four hours or for 24 hours....or multiple days.

That’s not bad. I’d get one of those tomorrow, if I could for that price.

I’ve asked my rental place about them and they said they are just too expensive to let weekenders operate.

They have some tough customers too. Last time I got the Bobcat E50, I was excited when they said it only had 100 hours on it. When I got it, the front window was busted out, it was full of dirt, scratched to hell, and already had a shitload of slop in the stick and bushings.

Yeah....I was wondering about that...... The damage costs could be real significant if you have a bad set of circumstances. I wonder what it costs to replace the carbides if you hit some rocks? I'd have allot of questions to ask about those. The did have a large machine with a hydraulic driven brush cutter too. The kid in the yard seemed to know allot about them.....and thought you could mow trees up to 4" and more. Likely a better deal for many of us. It rents cheaper too.

My thoughts exactly. Wear and tear on those things is significant even with a good operator.

Have you ever rented a SS with a brush cutter? Are they decent or just a normal mower positioned in the front?

Looks like a smaller version of what they use to clear whatever is in there way when the do the strips for power lines every so many years. The big ones look like they could chew a vehicle up with no problem.

I have used a brush wolf brand on a skid steer and it worked well. Not as practical as my flail mower pto driven for the things I need to do. Great for making a new trail/road but that's about it for me. Now I have an excavator for clearing and don't know how I ever lived without it.

I have not. My rental place doesn't get into specialty equipment much. There is a huge amount of risk with renting equipment for the equipment owner. All of these machines have the ability to destroy themselves with the wrong operator. That being said, I don't rent skid steers from them anymore because they are so underpowered they cannot even turn with an empty bucket. I still rent the digger because it's cheap and it does what it needs to do. The hydraulic pump leaves a lot to be desired because it cannot do three functions at once, and that slows down productivity.

Give some concrete guys a brand new skid steer and they can have it ready for the junk yard in under 1000 hours.

I’ve called a couple rental places recently to ask about these heavy duty mowers. So far, they’re not wanting to rent to individuals, only businesses. I may start another thread so as not to sidetrack this one more.

Just some flail mower porn for SD. Quit worrying about making tracks in your food plots with a rear mount mower.....it just doesn't happen......

I’ve watched that more times than I’m willing to admit.
