Sheds

That's a nice buck, hopefully his other half is lying in your field.

What do you have growing in that field?
He's standing in what is left of a NW whitetails brassica planting. The other strip was a mix of cereals/clovers.

Is there much food left there or did they eat most of it? My bean and corn plots are pretty much wiped out in se mn, so I might switch back to more brassica blends next year. Those seem to last a little longer.

Once the maple buds get a little fatter, down one or two of them. Almost guaranteed to get a shed or two in them. A little awrmup after this cold spell might be the perfect time. Antlers get hung up trying to get the buds. week later, cut the high branches down, they'll be at it again.

This is on our new property and we have about 3.5 acre destination plot and about 5 acres in total. Routinely had 20-35 deer in the destination plot from October to early December. If it wasnt for great brassica tonnage, they would have had it crushed much earlier. I like row crops, a lot but they don't provide the same amount of food during the season as other plantings, IMO. They are expensive and don't provide the serious attraction during Oct/Nov like greens do from my experience. I would need a really big plot or lower deer numbers to plant more grains on this property.

All that being said, we mostly ran out of food on this property and didn't hit our doe harvest objectives, so we'll see what next year brings.

Soybeans have always been my favorite, but they seem to draw in so many deer that they don’t last through muzzleloader season.

I usually find more sheds when I plant more brassicas, but the deer prefer the beans here first. I probably just need more acres of plots, but it gets time consuming and sometimes I’d rather go fishing.

I love beans, great way to clean grasses out of a field. However...there is a month or better when they're yellowing that they draw absolutely zero attention from the deer. That doesn't fit well into my management plans, especially in MN. If I have a target buck, I NEED my October food to be 100% dialed in to have a crack at him before the guns F everything up in early Nov. I don't have enough acres of plots to satisfy Oct through Feb so I have started favoring Oct through Dec.

Your sentiment on killing a buck in an early archery or MZ season before the orange army starts marching is shared by many on this forum…

I would agree with this but only when we have 6+" of snow on the ground. When we don't get snow the deer don't touch my brassicas.

Anyone check on the food pantry up in ME? Wonder how many of their bucks have shed.
I would say more than half have shed. There were lots of shed bucks who showed up when the Pantry opened in early December.

I was thinking in The Big Woods!
That is exactly where I think they are, or in the native grass pasture right next to it.
The cameras are showing about half the bucks have shed. Seeing around 30 deer in the evenings over there when I drive by.

Only downside is it keeps snowing off and on here.

My downside is there isn't any snow on the ground. Snow is your friend for shed hunting.

Cool, good luck when you search. Is that a buck you know? Just curious if he comes around a lot, or if you go in there now would you expect him to spook out and not return for a long time?

here's an opinion on early antler sheds

It was through the property all season, was my youngest son’s target buck. Mostly at night.
A lot of deer are yarded up on us this winter for the first time ever, so I don’t want to bump any of them out right now.
With the few inch’s of snow we have on the ground the sheds should keep for awhile? At least we are hopeful that they will, still a few bucks on camera that haven’t dropped yet too.
