Shafer Crab

greyphase

5 year old buck +
From the GRIN orchards. Developed in Alberta Canada so you know its cold hardy. Listed as being very resistant to fire blight. Grafted last spring and planted last fall it produced one apple this year which I picked today.

Sweet and delicious. On par with the Centennial crab for taste. Just wish it were about 3 times bigger. :)

Nice !! If it tastes like a Centennial, it's good. How does the tree look ?? Good growth habits ??

I might have to look into this crab.

Very nice! Another for me to look into also.

Too soon to tell. it's just been in the ground a year this fall.

I think that the fruit is pretty good sized compared to my dolgo crabs. I will have to look into this variety.

Does anyone know where this crab would be sold?

1 year and 1 apple, lol. I find posts like this to be offensive. :)

Sorry that isnt one we grow right now.

Wonder how it would do further south?

I have seen them listed before, but I don't remember where. :( They are not a common variety. I like the looks of it.

I'll be curious to see how long the fruit hang on this one.

Looks great. I'm grafting a few this spring.

I believe I have ID'd a local tree as a Shafer crab. There is still plenty of fruit hanging on that tree

Late dropping fruit, cold hardy, sounds great for around here in MN!!

It is also a very tasty little apple. My wife and I were both pleasantly surprised this fall when we pulled some fruit off the tree (it's in a public area, we weren't stealing ;) ). Sweet, tart, juicy...pretty much what you'd want in an apple. The only lacking is what greyphase said when he started this thread....size. They are small. Smaller than chestnut or whitney crabs.

bwoods - if you want a scion off that tree let me know. I'll be snipping a few next month.

Yes sir, but I'd need instruction...

This summer, I think I had some shafers from an old apple tree on a farm that I work on. Tasted great!
