Picked Up Another Strange Remington 760 Pump in .30-06

Natty Bumppo

5 year old buck +
I am always on the lookout for Remington 760's and 7600's. The 760 BDL's are a favorite of mine only because this was the first rifle my grandfather handed down to me when I was a kid back in the 80's. I just picked up another 760 BDL Gamemaster in .30-06 this week....didn't really need another but it was born in the same year I was (1969) so I thought what the hell.

If you're not familiar, the BDL option in these 760's was the fancy, high gloss Monte Carlo stock with the Basket Weave "checkering" (Basketweave Deluxe = BDL) and the little "hump" on the top of the receiver. This one I just bought has a see-through scope mount. Here's the absurd thing to me. The Monte Carlo stock on these make it almost impossible to use the iron sights when naturally shouldering the rifle. Your eye ends up being way too high and way too far left to get a good sight picture through a peep or through the iron sights. On the other hand, the see-through scope mount makes it tough to get a natural sight picture and cheek weld when using the scope. This rifle is the exact wrong combination. In trying to do everything, it does nothing well. You can't use the iron sights well, and you can't use the scope well.

Might have the barrel recrowned and cut to 18.5". Definitely ditching the see-through mount and putting on the nicest vintage 1960's era made in Denver, CO Redfield scope I can find.

Nice.

Im not a fan of those rings either, but plenty of folks on here want one on their gun. I'd put them on gunbroker. That a swift scope? Big numbers looks like it. Still got one on my glenfield 30. Just keeps working.

Yeah, it's funny I am on a 760/7600 group on FB and I've had a few guys tell me they want the rings. The scope is a Tasco 3x9. I don't think it's anything great. The glass is a little hazy.

Someone might want it. Atleast for someone itll be a safe queen that zeroed in.

I got a nice 3200 elite 1.5-4.5x32 I could put on my glenfield, but the swift will likely stay on there.

I go with quick detach rings with low weaver bases so you can still use the iron sights.

I been working on red dots use this winter,

These two marlins also are set up for peeps.

The red dot is a 308 MX

The scoped is a 356 W

Just now thinking about the ballistics…….i should probabally switch them.

Those see through rings were notorious for cracking. I was shooting one of the family 760s and swapped it to Talley ring/base all in ones and a Leupold VX-3 1.5-5 scope. It's nice and quick shouldering.

What are people paying for those old see through rings.

Safe Queen. Say it isn’t so.

My BDL still gets used once in while for it’s intended purpose.

Looks like you can find them on Ebay for $30 or $40 or so. A young hunter from PA contacted me on the 760/7600 Facebook group asking about them. I'm just going to let him have them. He'll put them to good use.

It's funny though, you do see a lot of see through mounts on 760's and 7600's coming out of PA.

Gorgeous deer, and a gorgeous rifle Bill. I see you're running a Vortex scope. While I do enjoy matching up vintage rifles with appropriate vintage optics, I am reconsidering putting an old Redfield on this rifle. This rifle I am going to use tracking, and some of those old scopes can be tough on old eyes. I might just go with a modern optic.

Yeah vortex lets in lots more light then the original Bushnell from the 80’s.

U can always mount the “ period correct” scope on it. Zero it. Take it off when you are really using the weapon and put on the modern scope then.

Yes, that's a good idea. I wish I wasn't such a nostalgic history buff....then I wouldn't care. I just think aesthetically an old Remington pump needs a nice vintage scope.

With detachable rings I find it easier to store rifles in a safe.

It’s also easier in the saddle scabbard.

I use a one sided saddle bag. The scope goes in it. I try to get the saddle bag to weigh similar to the rifle and scabbard.

Mine is also chambered in 30-06. I hand load for my 7MM because I could never find any factory accurate loads. The 760 shoots Remington 150 grain pointed soft points perfectly. Two holes in about a nickel at 100 yards. Which isn’t bad for a pump gun. Worth a try out of yours.

If you're from PA of a certain age and didn't have a 760 for deer hunting, I think they forced you to leave the state. There is still a Remington 141 in 35Rem in use in the family.

Thanks Bill. Good to know. I shoot the 180 grain Remington Core Lokts out of my 7600 Carbine in .30-06. For what I'm doing banging around the swamps and big woods of the Northeast these work great. But I'll definitely give the 150's a try.

LOL. Mine was exclusively for Bradford county PA in the early to mid 80’s. 6 guys in camp, 5 of us had 760’s and one had a 35 Winchester.
