Penn state soil testing

I collected samples from my foodplots at camp 2 or 3 weeks ago. Was going to use Dairy one again, but I see Penn state is a touch cheaper. And they have wildlife food plot as a code. Dairy one removed their rye with legumes crop code.

Anybody have a sample of what the $10 test is? Was originally planning on getting a good test for my better plot, and basic pH buffered testing for my other 2 spots. Sandy soil, good organic material in the better plot, more sandy in the other 2.

No big plot plans just maybe mow once in the summer, spray then lightly disc or throw n grow some rye n clover around mid august. Will lightly fertilize to get the organic matter up in the plots.

Whats everybody's goto for soil testing?

I just use the local extension office. The agent will always call and discuss the results so I can ask food plot specific questions.

I have used PSU for the last several years. Here's what you get: pH, P ppm, K ppm, Mg ppm-----w/ bar graph noting below min./optimum/ above optimum.........Limestone recomm/ Mg recomm
Based on your intended crop it lists N to be added in lb/ A.........phosphate to be added in lb/A......potash to be added in lb/A
You can list requirements req'd for 2 other alternative crops
Also lists Calcium in ppm/ acidity (meq/100g) / % saturation of the CEC for K, Mg, Ca
Lastly trace elements in Zn ppm, Cu ppm, Sulfur ppm and has a chart for these listing normal ranges in Penna soils
I had soil tests from PSU, Bio-logic, and Whitetail Institute.........all the same info except WTI gives you % organic matter and PSU charges for the extra test

I've used Mossy Oak Biologic soil test. I see now it's free with a $50 purchase. I've never had that big of purchase. But I do like their green top turnips in the winter bulbs mix. Can't find them anywhere else.

Going to try to get the samples together for monday. Probably can't lime up there till june anyways. And a few plots I do not want to disturb. I let nature do what it wants over the summer, then spray n plant for the fall. Soil helath has been looking pretty good year over year there.

May spread some NPK before planting in july based on recommendation. Most plots been happy without it. Been blindly throwing light lime each year like 1/4 ton / acre. I know my CEC is going to be low.

I use PSU for my lawn at home and food plots at camp. They have sample reports you can look at. I'm mostly concerned with correcting pH and their recommendations have been accurate with follow up testing confirming results a year or two later. I need to take more this spring for some lime applications we did last summer.

One other suggestion. There is a way to list 3 different crop codes per sample. Read the submission form carefully and you can figure it out. You can also list target yield for some crops, which can help dial in fertilizer quantities, if you care.

Here's one I did for Wildlife food plot and corn
