Not surprised even a little bit but pretty pissed

My wife had jury duty earlier this week. Anybody know if it's standard practice for the people asking potential jurors questions to see if you'll be on the jury and they use your name right there in front of the defendant? I certainly wouldn't think that they would give out the jurors names like that but we are in about the worst county in Minnesota so it wouldn't surprise me that the judge and lawyers don't know what the hell they are doing. I wasn't too happy to hear about it. First they force you to be on the jury and then they potentially put a bullseye on your back. I think it's absolute bull shit. Anyone been on jury duty?
 
And the trial was for the pretty routine drive by shooting at the local casino/reservation that they never make public so people are clueless to the rampant crime that goes on there. As luck would have it I'm up next for jury duty and have to call in to see if I'm a lucky winner or not in a few weeks. Guessing the case I will hear will be almost identical to what the wife just went through. They sweep all the bad info under the rug for about the last 30 years now. When they do arrest a native it's basically just a catch and release kinda deal.

wife: yes. the fact that my name was stated in front of the defendant a few minutes ago means that the only safe position I can take is not-guitly.

Really couldn't believe it when she told me that. She never even thought anything of it. That also bothered me. Then after the trial she talked with another juror that brought up their names being used right there in front of the guy and they did find him guilty by the way. Long list on this guys rap sheet already and he's a local tribe member and we're here in a small town. I can't believe it.
 
I thought maybe each juror would have an assigned number and that would be used instead of a persons real full name. Why not just give the guy my home address too while they're at it. If they have the last name they can find anyone now in a very short time. I suppose when they kick him loose for being found guilty of a drive by shooting then I can start looking over my shoulder for the rest of my life. Would be a little different if it was someone trying to beat a speeding ticket but no. FML

I've been called up many times. Always get dismissed during jury questioning. They've always called me up by name though.
 
I was called up but not selected last year. Something like 200,000 people in Minnesota are called in each year. I'm sure it's happened before, but if people's names are used on every jury you sure don't hear much about retaliation. I believe names are shared with the defense to ensure a fair jury selection. It's only in extreme cases that jurors are not known - think organized crime type.
 
My move for jury duty has always been to ask “is capital punishment an option for misdemeanors?”

Just show up in full MAGA gear. The defense attorney will instantly excuse you.
 
I never understand why people want to get out of jury duty so badly. To me, it would be like complaining about political leaders and never voting or complaining about traffic while sitting in it, not realizing they are literally traffic. It's a civic duty and part of the social contract. Be the change you want to see in the world.
 
The system is broke. My brother had to miss work because some inmate was masterbating in front of female guards. Jurors had to watch video of him. The second video he was peeking through partially open door. He had been busted 16 times before that but jurors were not aloud to use that information. His lawyer defence was its natural and everyone does it. Had some female jurors that were not going to find him guilty because could not see his full body on second video. Tried to convince that guards had it out for him. And we are paying tax money for this!
 
I got to sit in on one where the pedo had molested 50 kids ages 6 months to 16 years over the course of many years. He had been serving time in a low security mental hospital for 10 years or so and they were trying to get him out. His defense attorney said he had "turned the corner." 2 day trial. 10 minute deliberation.

Because there is no federal law protecting the wages/PTO lost to serving on a jury, and the money offered is a pittance. You're protected from getting fired for serving on a jury, but that's it. In 40 of the 50 states you can lose your wages or your PTO for days spent away from work while serving on a jury, and you are compensated usually around $15-50 per day by the court.

Some people see jury duty as a welcome vacation from work, but they are the minority. For most people, jury duty means a personal loss, and probably a setback at work, and a disruption to your family life. Why would anyone not try to avoid that? Employees should be better protected for missing work due to jury duty, illness, injury, etc.
 
I think if you can show receipts proving you have a vacation booked that it should count as a legit absence. BS to me that you can't.
