9 bucks = great plot! That plot looks really good, Newbie. Nice mix of stuff in there. We've also found buckwheat to be a good draw for deer - especially bucks, for whatever reason. Any rye in there? Hard to tell from the pic. If the deer thin it out, and you need more greens for fall & winter hunting - maybe toss down rye, oats, and maybe a bit more clover in any thin areas. The grains ought to germinate readily as long as you get decent rain.

Yes, there is rye in there as well. I think I might run though with another application of buckwheat in a week or two (I have plenty leftover) just to give them something to nibble on in the meantime. I have plenty of rye and buckwheat leftover from prior seeding so I'll reseed as needed if they get down to bare dirt or the plot has any weak spots. I top dressed with some clover, chicory brassicas last week in the areas that the 2,4d residual effected so I wanted to give those seeds a bit to germinate and get some headway before trampling them by foot to overseed again.

We've been fortunate to receive a few timely evening thundershowers to keep things just damp enough to keep it from drying out too bad. I hope it continues for another month or so until we pass the heat of summer.

Good luck with your overseeding results. NEPA has been getting more rain than we have down here in SEPA. Thankfully, our camp in NCPA has been getting rain like you have. Keep us updated on your plot.

Thank you! Hope things are turning out well your way. I know you’re keeping quiet due to some privacy concerns but I hope that big fella is still hanging around!

The seed mix basically a clover blend, brassica blend and chicory with rye and buckwheat as a nurse crop. I could get the varieties if needed but that’s the gist.

I’m pretty happy with how it’s turning out, although my biggest worry is if there will be anything remaining by the time the season opens. They’re hammering it, even at 3-4 acres the browse pressure is substantial. On a typical night we have 10-12 buck piling in about an hour before dusk, no giants but a bunch of respectable deer. Some nights I’ll walk down to my garage which overlooks that fields & can watch them file in.

Pretty happy with germination & weed suppression with the throw/mow. Deer are keeping it mowed down tight though! Counted 12 buck and 8 doe in the field yesterday at 6pm when I got home from scouting public lands nearby with my brother in-law.

We are scouting some big woods in the PA mountains. This particular section is about 100,000 acres of really rugged and diverse terrain. Had a really close call with a timber rattler up top. I already stepped over top him & was standing about 12 inches from him before he notified me. Curled up in strike position.

Seems foolish to hike over 11hrs scouting for deer when you’ve got a dozen buck standing in your yard when you get home, but it sure is fun getting out into some big country scouting for deer and bear.

Have you considered putting an exclusion cage on your plot?
