Morse Nursery

I bought some of their hybrid oaks in 2017 for my dad when he turned 65. Most are still doing decent at our cabin. We each kept one at home. They're doing well, but each suffered and incident.

Mine lost about 6' from the central leader 2-3 years ago. Some kind of worm bored a hole in it. Last year I got probably 50 acorns from it that I currently have potted, waiting to sprout. It's roughly 12' tall, but the top is fairly bushy/round.

My dad hit his with an insecticide 2-3 years ago that nuked all the leaves. It was stunted for a year or so. His gets some acorns, but he has more squirrels than me, so I dont think he got any last year. His is probably 20' tall.
What kind of oaks are they?

I don't have the full list anymore. I checked my email but the receipt didn't list the varieties. I know the one in my yard is a Sargent #5. I ordered 20 trees, so I probably picked 10 varieties.

First order received early May 2025. One pear was broke off at graft so doubtful with survive. Morse blamed FedEx but to be poor packaging.

After a month 3 of 4 pears alive. 10 of 10 oaks alive but little growth of buds or leaves. 4 of 8 chestnut alive, 4 are dead. Chestnut diameter only 1/16 - 1/32 of an inch, so small. Will see how or if Morse even replies. So far rate Morse a 4 out of 10. Have planted over 2500 seedlings last 5 years with success rate over 95% so my handling and care not an issue.

I think Morse sold his nursery to new people a few years back. We got 2 tree varieties from Morse back in 2013 that have done well for us at camp - a Morse hybrid pear (whatever that is), and a Nova Scotia crab apple. The pear tree gets a 2" to 2 1/2" round pear, and the tree gets loaded. The Nova Scotia crab makes apples about 1 1/2" to 2" in dia. Those were the only trees we got from Morse that did anything - so we haven't bought anything else since. FWIW.

Yes, Charlie sold out a few years back. I had similar experience as you. Though I do have 1 seedling Double Red crab I received out of 8 that shows a lot of promise. Racquetball sized fruit, starting to produce good crops. Haven't pinned down exact drop time yet, but it's later in the season it seems. Everything else has been $&_! from them...both ownerships.

I purchased 4 granddad pears from Morse in 2024. They were very small, maybe 12" tall when they arrived. 2 died immediately and Morse sent me 4 more. Now of the 8 originals I think 4 are still alive and are maybe 24" in their 2nd year.

I also purchased 25 apples and pears from Midwest and Blue Hill in 2024 and 2025. I have 100% survival of those.

Glad to hear you got at least 1 good one from Morse. I'm glad we got 2 out of about 6 we bought from them back in 2013. The others have been replaced with better trees from Cummins and Blue Hill. I hope your Double Red crab does well for you going forward.
