Morse Nova Scotia Crab

gunfun13

5 year old buck +
Anyone have a well producing Morse Nova Scotia Crab? I have one that I planted about 7 years ago, great growing tree, probably 18' tall now. Doesn't produce squat. Seems like it puts out a good amount of blossoms each spring, but drops fruit all summer long, so there is near nothing left by fall. What fruit is there is usually deformed and ugly.

Was supposed to be a grafted tree but now wondering if it was a seedling that came up short on desirable genetic traits.

We have a NS crab at camp. A Morse Nursery tree from 2013. No complaints here at all, gunfun. It's been a really good tree for us - nice shape, good crotch angles, good fruit. Apples are about 2" in dia. Sept. and Oct. dropper. I don't know what grafting / skills the newer owners have.

We also have a boat-load of other apples & crabs for pollination of all our trees. What's your pollination situation?

This tree was bought during the Charlie era, it's grown great. Crop is just abysmal when compared to my other crabs. Pollination shouldn't be an issue, has a Liberty directly on one side and a Kerr on the other.

The pic on their site shows fruit growing in clusters, I have have single apples scattered through out...and not many for the size of tree.

I have two Nova Scotia from Charlie bought in 2011 .The fruit does not grow in clusters. They’re normally decent producers. This year we had a cold spell for a couple weeks when they we’re in bloom and they have very little fruit.

Thanks Marlin, hopefully just a conditions issue and it comes around. Last year was a late frost, another year I sprayed insecticide while in bloom (learned my error after it was too late). Forgot about the cool weather this spring, explains why many of my apples didn't produce what I expected. Pears though, huge crop this year.

Our 2013 Nova Scotia tree doesn't have clusters either. But it seems to make nice fruit loads, scattered throughout the tree. Not a skimpy producer - but not breaking hanging branches either. We like it.

Has anyone ordered any Hybrid Pears from Morse in the last year or two under the new owners ?.

I've always wanted to try two of their small $20.00 size Hybrid pear trees , and just wondering the quality of trees you received with the new owners. I've seen plenty of bad reviews...but also seen a few pics of Hybrid pear trees that look great.

Our Morse hybrid pear was planted 2014. Old owners. It's a really nice tree for us. It, and the Nova Scotia crab, are the only 2 trees from Morse that have done well for us. Don't know what quality / varieties the new owners are putting out.

Thank you for the reply. I might buy 2 of those Hybrid pears someday . With the old owners you had to buy at least 10 trees and a minumum shipping of $50 or $75 *something like that , I don't recall the actual figures* .Recently I added 2 trees to the cart and the shipping is $25.00 , not too bad...

I've read good and bad about Morse, but most folks if not all, have never had anything bad to say about the Hybrid pear trees.

Maybe the scion died and your getting a tree that is rootstock.

Tempted to buy red splendor seedlings from yellow river nursery. So far I have no tree orders. Maybe, maybe, just maybe getting a few roostocks to graft. maybe.......

Not impossible. Bought it as a 3yo 7'+ tree. If that's the case, it happened on Morse's watch.

Hopefully the hybrid pears are still the same as in earlier years for you. We're very happy with ours. Pears are a bit bigger than a golf ball at our place.

Morse has a note on their site they exclusively use b118 and m111.

I placed a order for 2 Morse Hybrid pear trees earlier this year that was supposed to ship next month in October. However I ended up canceling that order. I'm still on the fence about trying trees from the new owners. I'm glad to hear you're very happy with your Hybrid Pears. Maybe next year I'll go through with it and get two, depending on how many new positive or bad reviews I see. At $20 per tree and I think it was $25 shipping for two trees it won't be a major $ loss if they don't pan out.

I've been a sucker for small 2 inch round pears ever since I saw the NativNurseries "wild deer pear" video. Unfortunately those trees didnt live up to expectations and only grew finger tip sized pears. I currently have 2 Dr deer pears , and a couple Gilmer Christmas and Wildlife pear trees from The Wildlife group and Double D pears from Bolu. The 2019-2020 planted Dr Deer pears are the only ones producing when they don't get hit with frost. All the others have only been in the ground a year or two.

This Morse Hybrid pear pic gets me excited to try a couple....but I'm aware a lot of people say not to buy from Morsehybrid-pear-3561128.jpg

TS,
Here is my Hybrid Pear 6 weeks ago, decent crop.
