Mine still hanging

Here's a "Rut tree" from Wolfrath’s planted in 2017. She been consistent on producing a bumper crop every other year. On the off years I still get about 20% of the bumper crop year. She starts dropping here (zone 5) in November. This is the latest they have hung on. Although they are falling with the slightest touch.

The only tree a home I have 3 of is Galarina. You going to let that double leader go on that tree?
YEP, it's a wildlife tree not a manicured orchard tree... I'm out for volume.

Angle on that one isn't too bad. Sometimes those competing leaders looks like theyre gonna break someday.

Trees at camp are treated differently than mine at home. Turning point looks pretty good. oping to get some scion for it this upcoming spring. Last year turning point didnt take on my rootstocks.

Anybody out there have a sundance? Wondering how late they stay up there? Grafting a few m111's for firends again, sundance might be one of them.

I’ve got a couple crabs that still have a few hanging here at home. All of the trees in this new orchard are very young, only have had crabs and a couple Asian pears throw any fruit yet.

^ ^ ^ Nice. What are those evergreens in the background? They look good too.

Thanks Bows, they ae blackhill spruce.
If I can ask, how big were they when planted - and how long in the ground? I considered BH spruce for camp. Got some newly opened areas. Wondering about the wait until decent size.

They have been in ground for two and a half years and were 4' when planted, balled in burlap not bare root. A little slower growers than blue/norway but now are starting to show some good up and out growth. We put 32 in I've had to replace two, I only watered a little the first summer and we mulched them good when planted. This past spring, I put some triple 12 around drip line.

The two we lost were from the fungus they can get coming out of winter...now I know to spray them heavy with a fungicide early in spring.

Had to walk by these crabs today on the way to my stand.

30-06
Holding well, but fruit just splatters when I shake them off. Still, I don't think the deer care.

Droptine-
Seems to have dropped more of it's crop than the 30-06, which is opposite of every previous year for these two trees. I'd consider it 80% dropped at least, it had a huge crop this year. Fruit still has good integrity. A guest shot his first ever deer last night, a nice mature doe, as she gobbled up fruit under this tree. It's worth mentioning, that while I did shake down some fruit today, none was shook off before yesterday's hunt...so they are dropping well enough on their own that deer visit regularly.

Nice update on the apple trees. Did you weigh that doe, she looks very large?

I know of several apple trees that splatter after they've been frozen. Doesn't slow the deer down at all. They get cleaned up like candy!

Bonus pic of a birdie crab but a prolific one. Strange to note that my place is about an hour north of where I live and basically no snow. Been cold enough but not much for moisture further north.

Looks like the deer cleaned off most of what they can reach on those trees, Rocks. Your pics look like great deer habitat, ---- as well as maybe grouse & turkey? We have some birdie crabs too, but the deer will clean up any that drop - or any they can reach. All good. Thanks for posting your pics.

So, droptine is a red crab? This past year I plucked off almost all flowers off my trees except a few. My so called droptine had yellow fruit about the size of an average store strawberry. Lots of cedar apple rust on it it. Was going to topwork or dig up and transplant up north. Although my oldest droptine up nrth had some winter dieback on the leader the 1st winter up there.

rocknstumps, franklin cider a decent one for you? Got only 3 or 4 good zone 3 trees with enough scion for about 20 grafts. Franklin is one of them. That ranetka looks pretty good. Plan A was to graft all my ranetka and let the ones that reject grafts be seedlings. Doubt I can graft 10 for 10.

I had one or two white spruce die 2 years ago from ome sort of black fungus. I spray mine too. Got maybe 80-100 spruces at home. 1ft seedlings from 2017, some are 10ft tall, more are about 8ft. Watered when drought is pretty bad the past 2 or 3 years and a little fertilizer here too.

I planted 10 of theses a couple years ago. I don't have any fruit yet. Those crabapple are bigger than I was expecting. How do you like the Rantekas so far? Mine have grown super fast. They seem like a really tough tree. I wonder how they would be for rootstock.

Droptine is yellow but will turn brown by this time of year.
