Milo Deer Preference - hunting season overview

I’m definitely going to have to try this on my ground. Thanks Foggy
Kinda remember you from some time back. Saw the Nimrod addy. Still have land there? You're just a few miles west of my place near Jenkins / Pequot Lakes. Live in the Nimrod area too? Kinda like that area.......

Yea, I was a member back when all you guys left QDMA. I still have my 160 a few miles east of Nimrod. I live down in Wyoming, MN. I’ve kind of neglected my habitat work the last few years. Now that I’ve semi-retired I will be jumping back into the game and playing catch up, I knew I had to get back in touch here to get no-BS information.

Not so sure about the no BS part.....but we can ignore what Art posts. lmao. Grin

I suppose so much depends on your geographic area. Today I took an hour to do a quick property tour at my land.....I call it the Tundra, among other things. We have nearly a foot of snow in many areas....and the deer are seeking anything with more nutrition than twigs. Buds and twigs will soon be their ONLY food source for the next 3 months or so. All my apple trees have paths around them checking for any remaining fruit.

Most of my brassica plots have large areas where the deer have dug the snow away to forage on the food plot remains.....mostly in the brassica plots but also they are after some remaining clover and winter rye. They pretty much take what they can get now. It's hard to see from this angle....but there are many areas like this throughout my land where the deer are scavenging what ever they can. Life here is rough many years.

I'm pretty damn sure....that my deer would eat those seed heads if they were there. I think I would bet about 10 to one or better on that score.

On my farm the deer eat every single head of Milo. There isn’t one that made it to winter.
I'm sure that's very true for you tundra guys. Milo heads would be calories for deer. After all, milo is a bird seed in many commercial seed mixes - so it's food. As SD said further above, there's no downside to milo. Our deer mainly use it in the green stages - but that's here, and I'm sure our deer would eat the brown heads if we didn't have other food sources.

Deer digging for your brassicas & rye is a good thing! Every little bit helps. Thanks for posting the pics, Foggy.

I used NW milo and planted milo for the first time on this farm. I planted it with JD70 planter, two rows milo, two rows soybeans. It came up great, looks great, and deer are utilizing it very well. It is about a 1 acre plot and deer numbers are low. They definitely hammered the milo in late fall compared to when I checked it in Sept. There is roughly 1/3 left. Same with beans, except they browsed the beans from moment they came up until they went yellow. I'm satisfied with the deer use of the milo.

This is in NE.

@Foggy47 still owes me a triple Lindy into the pond for staying on solar for years after when he said I’d break down and surrender to the grid.

If you're going to buy this seed from Jon at NWW.....better do so soon. I think he sold out in January last year. Thank me later. He does have some superior seeds....this is one of 'em I think. Maybe he can come up with some magic beans? .....grin. A few guys have made a fortune selling magic beans. ;)
