Milo to protect beans?

Milo will pop up and grow through about anything.

I do think you would need a thinner patch of Milo to grow beans with it.

I use Milo every year with Aeschynomene and Alyce clover. They play together great.
Who do you buy you Aeschynomene and Alyce from?

Several years ago, I planted milo mixed with soybeans, adjacent to a plot of straight RR soybeans. Thirty days later, I sprayed the RR beans, without touching the soybean/milo mix.

We had a hot, dry summer that year, and my straight RR beans didn't do well. But the soys planted along with the milo did great! I think they liked the shade, and the straight soys got more deer damage.

So...I plant lots of Alice white clover (ladino) here.....are you saying you can drill milo into a thick stand of clover and it will grow? (even if it's shaded?)

Working on a three sisters mix.....and considering these three

1. NWW Red Milo
2. Pumpkins or squash seeds from Harris (variety?)
3. Collard seed from Deer Creek Seed

Thinking of making two passes with my drill for 10'wide plot through my clover plots (which are now rimmed with Switchgrass). Plant early June or so. Not sure if I could drill the pumpkin or squash seed....but I would like to. Any words of wisdom here?

I've planted Hansen, I think it was called. They have powdery mildew resistant varieties too.

I got to back up on my reply. Memory ain't as good as it use to be. Drilling the milpa mix went fine except for the bigger pumkin seed. And I to used milo instead of corn for the vines to climb. Westwind my first year planting milpa looked like yours but the drought this year took a toll. My wife liked the mini gourds.

How did you guys prep for this type of planting? Spray, till, or disc? Both? I have a corner of a hay field I would like to convert to something like this. Thinking I should get the grass killed good before planting?

OK....so I am going to plant via my drill and no-till methods...to preserve moisture. I have trouble planting into a good clover crop unless I terminate first with a mix of 2 Qts Glyphosate and 1 pint of 24d. Wait two weeks and drill the Green Cover Milpia mix and some NWW red milo tor vertical cover.

If I was into tillage I believe I would use 2 qts round up and 1 pt 24d. Then the following day I would disk it up. After two weeks glyphosate again.....and broadcast the sees and work them into the soil (drag or disk) and culitpack. Take the time to do good weed control before you plant. My 2 cents.

^^^ This is the right way to do it. 100%.
