Medlar for Wildlife

A2D2R2

Yearling... With promise
Does anybody have any experience planting Medlar trees for wildlife? Will deer eat Medlars? Can Medlars be grafted onto apple trees?

I have read about medlars but have never seen one. I've not read of grafting it to apple. It can be grafted onto pear and hawthorn. On pear should give more of a tree while hawthorn wild give more of a bush. I am sure deer would eat the fruit but I'm not sure how useful it would be. The fruit is astringent until almost rotten (bletted) but they will soon rot up. If deer got the taste, it could be nice be a draw when fruit are ready.

Questions I have are whether deer would browse the tree and if the fruit would drop to the ground for deer to eat or blet and rot on the tree.

Medlars are rare and I've never heard of sometime using them for deer. Some guys are trying jujube and che. Apples, pears, chestnuts, and persimmons are much more common and easier to research and implement.
