Managed hunt on public

Thx for the updates and good luck!

Day three: I woke up before the alarm went off giving me time to regroup. I set up today closer to the campground, hoping the new location will work better for the change in wind direction.

I can hear coyotes yelping in just about every direction as they are feasting on the carcasses from yesterday’s harvests. IMG_7803.jpeg

First update: 15 minutes into shooting light and I’ve not heard a single shot. What a contrast from yesterday morning. The site I picked out in the dark is about 20 yards from where I need to be. One of the challenges on a hunt like this is that you do not know where the other hunters are located.

Yesterday a hunter came into the area that I was set up in, and started to set up when he saw my blaze orange 140 yards away and very politely moved. So far, I do not see anyone else, but it looks like my blind is only about 5 yards from a deer path, which is a little bit too close.

Update two: I’ve only heard one shot since shooting hour began. I went ahead and relocated the blind about 20 yards to the north, which will work well with the south wind that is coming.

I just had a text from my son, as he at the farm for youth season with our granddaughter. One of our target bucks walked by the blind 35 yards and the AR platform rifle she is using misfired. I believe that will be the last time he uses that gun for hunting. They are devastated. I encouraged him to go back to the house, get my 243, and go to one of the larger blinds. The deer they were after showed up on another camera about a minute later, and seem to be fairly unfazed.

Update three: it was very quiet until 830, and I heard two shots within about a minute of each other, very close by. Unless I start to see some action I’ll probably stay in the blind until about 9 AM, and then go back to camp and debone the deer from last night. This set up should work pretty well for an afternoon sit, as the wind in the thermals are ideal.

Update four: with the ever-changing, wind and weather, I made one more move.

I saw a lot of deer sign around this little pond. I’m hoping that they’ll come through here before heading into the large open area that is off-limits to the hunt. I was somewhat surprised nobody else is here. I would say about 2/3 of the hunters have left, and from what I heard this has been a good harvest this year. When I check out, I’ll try to get the actual numbers.

Update five: The set up worked as planned (amazing) and I was able to fill the second antlerless tag with a button buck. now that it is checked in, I am able to harvest a buck if one presents itself. There’s some beautiful deer here, and I think I found a pretty sweet spot IMG_7819.jpeg

Managed Hunt: Epilogue
While the last hour and fifteen minutes with a buck tag did not produce any deer sightings, I am really glad I was chosen for this management hunt. According to the MDC website, the final tally was 6 bucks, 12 button bucks, 41 does, for a total of 59 deer. This is over double last year's harvest during the same weekend. A total of 83 hunters were drawn, and 64 checked in by day one.

Here are the takeaways:
1) I've been hunting our managed property so much that I had not realized I was not willing to move and adjust. Over the course of two days I hunted in six locations, adjusting for wind, thermals and pressure.
2) Still hunting and hunting from the ground still works.... I am going to put this into practice during deer camp
2) It was fun not worrying about "is it large enough" knowing that the goal of this hunt was herd reduction.
3) Despite hunting 12 hours on day one and 9 on day two, the changing of locations based on prior scouting and on-x made the time go by quickly
4) While I love telecheck and don't want to go back, it was fun checking in the deer, seeing their harvests, and talking to other hunters.
5) It is possible to hunt with no camera data...who would have known :-)

I processed the doe during lunch break on day two. I didn't get an official weight, but my son agreed to let me call her "sixty pounds." The button buck weighed in at 67#. Given I failed to "exclude" managed hunts in our "average weight" contest, I think I just gave my son an unexpected gift!

I think I'll sign up for another managed hunt next year!

Very awesome!

I second the notion that being “ stuck” in a certain spot or stand will spank yer azz!

Still hunting is my favorite way to go.

I got two cameras but I don’t use them…..they leave tracks, you can see them.

But I’m out west where you CAN see. I’m sure cameras are helpful in many ways.

Hope the deer you harvested are tasty
Congratulations
John
