Managed hunt on public

Thx for the updates and good luck!

Day three: I woke up before the alarm went off giving me time to regroup. I set up today closer to the campground, hoping the new location will work better for the change in wind direction.

I can hear coyotes yelping in just about every direction as they are feasting on the carcasses from yesterday’s harvests. IMG_7803.jpeg

First update: 15 minutes into shooting light and I’ve not heard a single shot. What a contrast from yesterday morning. The site I picked out in the dark is about 20 yards from where I need to be. One of the challenges on a hunt like this is that you do not know where the other hunters are located.

Yesterday a hunter came into the area that I was set up in, and started to set up when he saw my blaze orange 140 yards away and very politely moved. So far, I do not see anyone else, but it looks like my blind is only about 5 yards from a deer path, which is a little bit too close.

Update two: I’ve only heard one shot since shooting hour began. I went ahead and relocated the blind about 20 yards to the north, which will work well with the south wind that is coming.

I just had a text from my son, as he at the farm for youth season with our granddaughter. One of our target bucks walked by the blind 35 yards and the AR platform rifle she is using misfired. I believe that will be the last time he uses that gun for hunting. They are devastated. I encouraged him to go back to the house, get my 243, and go to one of the larger blinds. The deer they were after showed up on another camera about a minute later, and seem to be fairly unfazed.

Update three: it was very quiet until 830, and I heard two shots within about a minute of each other, very close by. Unless I start to see some action I’ll probably stay in the blind until about 9 AM, and then go back to camp and debone the deer from last night. This set up should work pretty well for an afternoon sit, as the wind in the thermals are ideal.

Update four: with the ever-changing, wind and weather, I made one more move.

I saw a lot of deer sign around this little pond. I’m hoping that they’ll come through here before heading into the large open area that is off-limits to the hunt. I was somewhat surprised nobody else is here. I would say about 2/3 of the hunters have left, and from what I heard this has been a good harvest this year. When I check out, I’ll try to get the actual numbers.

Update five: The set up worked as planned (amazing) and I was able to fill the second antlerless tag with a button buck. now that it is checked in, I am able to harvest a buck if one presents itself. There’s some beautiful deer here, and I think I found a pretty sweet spot IMG_7819.jpeg
