Later to Leaf out / later to bloom Apples.

Check back in old threads from Chainsaw about Turning Point. He started things with the original seedling tree. Sadly he has passed on so you will need to dig a bit yourself instead of him passing along more info

Might be asking if someone has both winter wildlife and turning point scion for next year.

Contacted blue hill, the tree is from NY. A little bit north of Pulaski by the eastern lake ontario shore. Decent chance I snowmobiled past it once. Definitely something I want to graft a few for camp.

Anybody have mature fruit pictures of turning point? I think I am going to graft a macoun for camp next year too. Got one at home from stark.
Ryan has some good info on his FB page. IMG_8232.jpeg

Not sure if Ryan knows the exact location, but he did toell me the town. Sure would like to see that tree someday. Do spend time hunting and fishing in that area. Might put a boat in lake ontario one year too for the season.

Read some of chainsaw's stuff. He sure did pass some good wisdom down.

Most of us are out of the last frost free date. Western Adirondacks NY in my area is june 1st for last frost free date. Typically last frost fre date is when frost occur less than 10% of the years after.

Been awhile since I saw a frost here in my part of NY. Feel like every tree has a decent chance to make apples this, If I didn't pluck the blossoms to make the trees grow faster. I am down to only 5 old mature trees original to my property. All of them had a good bit of blossoms. One I will be making way for a new tree this year.

Surprised how late 30-06 leafed out and bloomed this year. Surprised how early kerr bloomed this year. Arkansas Black bloomed pretty late this year.

Any honorable mentions in your orchards?

We had a had frost this morning. Most of my trees are just about done blooming.

My two cobbler crabs are very slow leafing out compared to the rest of my trees. The canisteo is also pretty slow. These are in there 4th year on my property, and I have yet to see a blossom on them. They're good growers though, so hopefully maybe they'll burst next year

Not sure what they sent me but this tree is in the process of getting top worked. The tree was supposed to be a Wickison. It’s definitely not. Whatever it is it’s horrible in every way. No acid at all and very mealy. I’m converting it to Galarina, sweet 16 and maybe Williams pride next year. It’s insanely late for me in sw Wisconsin.

Galarina in background yesterday for comparison. And the apple is on the far left from last September.

Actually had to give up on the tree bark grafting because the bark was so thin on this tree compared to other trees I’ve topworked. So I did a cleft graft on the lowest branch.

Some trees are satisfying to dig up and not replant........

Galarina seemed pretty good to me, so I bought 3 last year. How's the drop times on it. Seem to wake up around when liberty did this year.

Might undo a topwork. The 3rd galarina I put a scion of all winter hangover ontop. I planted 2 AWHO around the 2nd week of april at camp. Come back in 2 weeks and just about fully leafed out and flowers on it. One was grafted in 2023 and grew a year at home, and the other came from SLN last month. Thinking this guy is going to not be very good producer blooming so early.

Wish I could put some enterprise, galarina, sundance, and granny smith at camp. Never survive zone 3 though......

Galarina Liberty and Enterprise still reign supreme at my place for apples apples. Liberty blooms earlier for me compared to the others. Crabapples thats a different story. I really like the varieties I’m working with!!

Interesting that a number of years ago was always Enterprise, Freedom, and Liberty mentioned as the cool kids on the block for people/wildlife apples. Don't see Freedom mentioned much at all last 5 yrs. Been bumped by Galarina in most postings. Just wondering why Freedom kicked to the curb. Don't have any so no experience from me.

I don't really like the supermarket Gala apple so convince me if Galarina is different enough to try.

I remember hearing the same, planted my freedom and it has been a wimpy, leaning tree. It’s on an unknown stark rootstock, so I’ve considered grafting it onto something else to see how it does.

On the trees I actually know the variety Arkansas black might be the last to get going for me. Followed by enterprise and Florina. Al those tress are on b118. Which does very well for me. Side Note. Trees in my nursery wake up later in m111 here compared to b118

Little hesitant to buy Arkansas black, but glad I did. Notice burr knots on it too. I bought it from stark on mystery rootstock. Between the rootstock color and burr knots, good guess it likely m111 maybe 106.

I got an enterprise of M111 and B118 and sundance one M111 and M7. So I can see some comparison of differences on those types atleast.

My Arkansas Black's from BH are growing nicely. Blossoms this year, which is the 3rd summer in the ground. Can't wait to try one.

I read somewhere that Freedom wasn't so good at DR as other apples. Don't remember where I read that, but the article's author said he couldn't recommend it anymore. We have no Freedom trees at camp - so no personal experience with it.

Not many years on my freedom, 2 I think. Cedar apple rut seems to be ok with it. I got it as bad as you can get. At worst maybe -15 deg F at home past 2 years, no winter dieback. I had one apple on it, yellow jacket got it before I could. Gonna be a real fight with those guys here at home.

Galarina has been good so far. Planted 3 last spring. No dieback, no rust, and no fruit yet either. Maybe a little shy of 3ft of growth. Pretty goo for all of them on M111.

Hoping sundance works out to be a good one. So far, no rust issues. PEar tree next ot it had fireblight, so maybe resistant to that too. Growth was a touch over 3ft last year on M7. Took a few inches of the top at planting and made 3 more sundance on M111. They had a good 1st year too.
