What's good and what's not on B118

bigboreblr

I am thinking B118 is good for wildlife. But, suspect certain vigorous varieties and being too rich on nutrients can cause problems. Thinking crabapples are good, and 50/50 on commercial apples.

IF you guys don't mind tell us what varieties have been good and what have been bad, your soil, and fertilizing habits.

Good for me:
Crossbow, (3) 30-06, enterprise All seem tougher than my m111's.

Not good:
(2) Liberty

Suspected B118: (2)macoun (good), Freedom (bad), Cranberry (known b118, seems good, but not great growth), Arkansas black(very bad)

God heavy but rich clay, dug 4x8x3ft deep holes amended well with peat moss, leaf litter, lime, osmocote, coffee cup per inch of triple 10 2x a year.

B118 have been almost a total failure for me in western NY. They lean horribly and of the 12-18 trees I have tried on them the only ones that are still standing are 2 Franklins that look like Charlie Brown trees and a Transcendant crab that seems to be doing great. All the others have fallen over or slowly died for one reason or another.
We have mostly clay here but they have been planted in some good to great soils as well. Liberty, Enterprise, Franklin, Chestnut, Transcendant are just some of the trees I have had on B118. MM111, Antonovka , P18 and Dolgo are the others I have. P18 has been slow and the jury is still out. AS I have stated before, my best trees have been on Dolgo and MM111.

All of my B118s are now lying on the ground from wind. Once down they make nice browse until they eventually die. I’ve never had a single tree on MM111 to go down.
